The First Week ofSchool

Layout by Carli Posey and Kimberly Piccoli

It is almost hard to believe that the
summer is over and we are all back
to the grind of chool It -eerns like
only yesterday we were sleeping in
and had no worries about anything.
Then, all of a sudden, we hear that
all-too-familiar voice of our mother
or father banging on the door,
telling us to get out of bed or we
will be late for chool. As we
slowly it up and creep into our
bathrooms, we get the feeling that
the fun is all over and it is time to
hunker down with tho e twentypound schoolbooks all over again,
not to mention putting up with
tho e teachers, -orne more excited
than others, and their never
changing "Rules for the
Classroom." A we walk through
tho e double door and stroll to our
lockers, we can catch the stench of
all-purpose cleaner that tends to
fade away a oon a you move m
And the meII of new clothes and
backpacks, along with the plastic
wrap from new chool supplie , is
everywhere you tum. As that first
bell rings, like zombies we
meander to our first class and sit by
our closest friend, thinking "Hey,
this won't be o bad," until the
teacher pulls out that ever-sofamous eating chart. After we find
out that we have been seated with
our best friend practically on the
other side of the world, we receive
that brief summary of what will be
expected of us from the teacher and
what type of assignments we will
have to perform. Sometimes, it
seem that this small ritual on the
first day can make or break how
you will feel for the rest of the day.
Then comes the fun part when we
march up to the front of the
clas room and gnb that dingy
textbook that our parents probably
u ed when they were our age and
call out that special number that the
teacher will keep clo e to our
names in her acred grade book.
Then, we all tend to sit there and
listen to the teacher give a speech
of how he/she would like to see
things performed in the classroom.
The clock slowly creep forward
and ometimes backwards. Then,
like a ong from the heavens, that
last bell rings; and we are free until
the real deal starts tomorrow.

The 2000 volleyball season was very memorable for the girls and their
coach. This season was different from any of the other seasons because the new
head Varsity coach, Mrs. Close had different plans as to how her teams were
going to play. Both coach Close and the girls had a wondrous time throughout
their whole season! When I talked to the players about their season they had a
lot of insight as to how they felt their season went. The one thing that
everyone said was that they had tons of fun even though most of them wished
they had gone past districts.
The Varsity senior girls and Mrs. Close had their own comments on the season.
"Our record wasn't as pleasing as I hoped, but I had a lot of fun with my friends
one last season." -Nikki Walker #3"Throughout the 2000 volleyball season I learned about skill & determination;
but mostly about the things you can achieve when you believe in yourself &
team ... "-Erika Kaiser#&-"
I wish we would have gone past districts because we were good Prough but I
had a lot of fun anyway!"-Andrea Cusick #8-"
Despite the tears and frustration, we had fun and learned a lot about ourselves
in the process." -Andrea Zink #11- "
The season was fun and interesting to say the least." -lindsay Dallison #7"I loved playing with these girls and I hope they had the best season!"-Amy
Guy #2- "The season did not turn out as well as we all had hoped. However, it
was a lot of fun and our senior year was a blast to the end! Go Wolverines!"
-Becky Evers #10"I had a great time playing with all you bananas! And to Becky and Erika: You'll
always be my Vie's." -Melinda Johnson #9"I had a lot of fun playing with the girls our senior year.' -Sarah Sanchez# 1"0ne of the best games we played was against
Dolores in the Mancos Tournament. We were down
4-14. Instead of quitting, the girls dug in and
played hard. We ended up losing the game but it
was 17 to 19. I am also proud of the win we
earned against Centauri at Centauri,
and the close games we played at
Ignacio. We would have liked to
win more matches at the District
level. We beat Monte Vista, played
hard against Pagosa and took
Ignacio to 3 games. We finished
4.. in the Intermountain
League. • -coach CloseThis season was tough, but the
Lady Wolverines and Coach Close
rose to the challenge, pulled their
team together and beat some
pretty hard teams. The girls
represented the Wolverines well!

Nothing much ever happens in Holeinroad, a little town way out Way Out West, according to gossips
Gilda Lillie and Echo Chambers. (You'll have to forgive Echo, she was born in a canyon and talks
kinda funny.) Nothing that is, except the exciting tale of Holder Posey, the felonious traveling
photographer and his attempt to rob the vault of the Golden Spittoon Saloon. Gilda and Echo recount
to story of Holder and his novice assistant, Candide Cameron, who are thwarted in their evil actions
by our hero, Drew Deline, a poor sketch artist. Ah, both Drew and Holder have their eyes on Ida
Claire Yawl, the fair school teacher from Atlanta. When Ida rebuffs Holder's advances, he ties her to
the vault door and attempts to blow up the both of them with dynamite! Never fear! Drew saves the
day and soundly thrashes holder in a stop-motion fight you have to see to believe! Other wacky
citizens of Holeinroad include Pastor Pepper: Winnie Gallup, a pony express rider; Sheriff Freddy Katt
and his deputy Deadeye Orb; Mother Sweetums and her Baby Boo-Boo (who is very large for his age!);
Dr. Bill and the scalpel-wielding Nurse Cutter; and the saloon owner and her hostesses. The Wild, Wild
West was never wilder or funnier!

A Superb Season
The girl's basketball team had a breakthrough season for them this year. Mr.
McDermott, the new head coach at BHS, led the girls through an 8-12 overall record. The
girls started working together as a team and were able to make it into the district tournament
for the fi rst time in seven years. Bayfield High School is very proud of the accomplishments
of their team and the hard work that they did.

Bayfield High School Wrestling
had a new look this year. New Head Coach
Herb Stinson brought a new attitude and style
to BHS. Coach comes to us from Aztec .M.
He led his teams to twel e state champions and
several national rankings. However everything
was not new and unfamiliar as long time head
coach Rick Edwards stayed with the team as
Assistant Coach. This was a winning combination
as numbers were up and the Wolverines started
coming on strong again. Top performers were
sophomore Dan Edwards, fifth place at regionals
at 122 lbs., junior Ethan Morri on took sixth place
at 152 lbs., and senior Ke in Black at 160 lbs.

Peer Mediators help keep students together. If someone has

By G1lbert hawcroft

In memory of a fallen friend,
Who lost his life to a tragic end.
It ended abruptly without a pause,
But in our hearts he will live on.
A memory of his life we ' ll keep,
And hold it dear although we weep .
.--------He was to some as many are,
A true best friend, with a heart.
