We'ue Made I t !
The class of 1998 started with new faces that soon became familiar.
Some of those faces have left and some new ones have arrived. However,
there are twenty-five out of sixty-nine people who have been here, together, for
the thirteen years. We started school in 1984 with excitment to see things and
to learn. Now, the time has come for us to see the real world and be our own
person.
As we grow and go to college, go to work, or whatever it may be that we
are going to do, we will always have our memories of school. Whether it be
good or bad memories of teachers, friends, or assignments; we will carry them
with us. Many of us may remember learning math in grade school or those
dreadful Phonics books that seemed endless. Others will remember the
change of middle school to grade school. The memories of going from middle
school to high school will probably be the strongest. Some of us may remember the crazy biology teacher who always had interesting stories to tell. The
athletes will have those memories of travel and the many competitive events.
Out of all these memories. we will probably remember the ones of our
friends the most. There is a world to be seen and we shall go our separate
ways, but let us remember our childhood that we spent together.

Eighth grade continuation marked the beginning
of a new adventure. Back row: Casey Potter,

Grady Dunavant has had many accomplishments in his four years at Bayfield
High School. He is a reliable and hardworking person. Learning through other
people makes Grady a good listener. Grady was on the cross country team that
placed first in league and regionals. Running at state was the most enjoyable
moment for him . He has plqyed basketball all four years and is very proud of making
varsity for his senior year. Grady is the vice president of his 4-H chapter and finds
this his most rewarding community activity. School has helped him most by teaching
himself self-discipline and responsibility.

CLASS OF 1 ggg
The climb continued at a more feverish pace! No longer underclassmen, the class
of 1999 began the push to collect credits for graduation . Those wishing to receive an
honors diploma completed twenty hours of community service, many took the ACT and
SAT college entrance tests for the first time and others enjoyed the opportunity of taking
more electives. English Ill remained the only class that every junior had to take, since
requirements in math, sci'ence and social studies have become more flexible. Runn ing
concessions stands and hosting the community Halloween Carnival provided money for
the traditional Junior-Senior Prom. A small but tenacious committee planned and carried
out the special night which was held at the Doubletree in Durango. Probably the best
part of being an upperclassmen at the new school was being able to drive off campus for
lunch! Leadership opportunities were everywhere for the class of '99'. Some latched on
and will continue to scratch their way to the top.

CLASS OF 2RBB
A "sophomore" is defined by the dictionary as being a fool and a moron. The
adjective form of the word indicates being conceited and immature. Nothing could be
further from the truth for the Bayfield class of 2000.

This group is full of enthus1asm

and dexterity. They have always stood out in academics, sports, and in overall good
attitude. This is the year that many purchased class rings and letter jackets, learned
how to spell SOPHOMORE very quickly as a part of the class cheer, and enjoyed the
status of no longer being at the bottom of the class hierarchy.

Most obtained their

driver's license (but could not leave campus) and found it fun to be in the new and
bigger building. "We have always been on the top", says Kinsee Morlan. "We are the
class of 2000 and we are ready to take on the world!"

What a change! From being "top dogs" in middle school to being the lowest
on the totem pole takes quite an adjustment, yet many freshman successfu lly
withstood the challenge.

This is the biggest class at BHS with 104 members.

Firsts for them included experiencing the four period block system , undergoing
freshman seminar, playing back on C or JV teams, and not necessarily having the
same teachers for various subjects.

Body piercing, various colors of hair, "in

clothing" and relationships still set the mood for many in this social group. "We
have grown up a lot since being here," says Andrea Zink. "We all have it together
in our own way and that is what is important."

Bayfield High School traveled back to the Greek ages October 6-11 for
the 1997 Homecoming theme, "Greek Gods." Monday was crazy hat/dress up
day, Tuesday was a formal dress up day, Wednesday was cross dress day,
Thursday was toga day, and Friday was spirit day. Activities on Friday were full
of games at the pep assembly followed by the parade. A few cross country
runners went to a Bloomfield Invitational to get some extra experience. The
seniors won the Peachfuzz Volleyball tournament. Unfortunately, the Powderfuff
Football game and the bonfire were canceled due to bad weather. Saturday
started off with an alumni coffee at 9:00a.m. followed by the volleyball games at
10:00 a.m. The football then played an exciting game against Del Norte. The
cross country boy's team won their first league title in Sargeant. After all of the
hustle and work, "Shake Your Bods With the Gods" dance rocked 'till midnight.

STUDENT
Student Council has many responsibilities and demands a great deal of dedication. Thi~
group plans and executes the main activities for the school year as well as participates in local
service activities. They started the year off by hosting tours of the new school and then
orchestrating a super Homecoming Week. A Christmas time assembly and a spring fling/game
afternoon completed the large projects. They held two blood drives and carried out activities for
the elderly as a part of their community service commitment. Leadership skills were sharpened
by attending area and state conferences. Before they knew it, the year was over and new
officers had been elected.

Being in FBLA is a good way to be successful and gain leadership qualities.
"FBLA is the largest of all vocational student organizations. (It) gives students the
opportunity to learn leadership and about all kinds of different business subjects
including job interview and impromptu speaking," according to FBLA sponsor, Mrs.
Denise Haga. The group participates in Project Merry Christmas , Adopt-aHighway, Parents Night Out, the Back to School Supply Sale, the IRA Seminar,
and they run the Den. This year there were 58 members in FBLA. Out of those 58,
14 of them went to state in Vail. There were three people who placed at state:

With the help of Melissa Baxter, Mrs. Sherry Kimball produced two school
plays and a one act play for the school this past year. The first play, Saturday the
14th, was performed in the fall and it was a comedy. Laura Dallison and Melissa
Baxter were in charge of backstage and lights for both plays. With their help the
plays went off without a hitch. For the musical, Mrs. Kimball chose The Hobbit.
The BHS Thespian Troupe also performed a one act play called Mirrors for the
school and in Alamosa for competition. The faithful actors/actresses at Bayfield
High School look forward to another year of laughs, tears, and amazing music.

active members in 1997-1998 and they were all females.
President was Brook Bassett, vice-president was Jori
Andrews, secretary was Kristin Tidrick, and treasurer was
Rachel Magg. Other seniors were Jessica Walter and
Whisty Taylor. The only junior who participated the entire
year was Lauri Berger. NHS is composed of students who
have a grade-point average of at least 3.7 and who have
completed twenty hours of community service each year
as an active member. If the requirements are not met
during membership, the student is removed from the
organization. At the end of their senior year, the students
have earned a NHS pin and blue and gold ropes which are
worn on their robes at graduation.

For varsity, the season started out slow with a couple of loses, but once
the team learned to play together they were amazing. Every one of the girls
on the team contributed in one way or another to end up killing Ignacio and
qualifying for districts. Mrs. Bev Hott's team took second in districts and,
determined to win , went on to regionals. Unfortunately, because of nerves
and little mistakes, they were unable to win any game at regionals.
Junior varsity, coached by Mrs. Jana Pickett, had an amazing season.
The team worked wonders on the court and came out undefeated the second
half of the season. The C team also had an outstanding season.

The 1997 Bayfield Wolverine Football team may not have had all the success that 1
experienced last year, but it was still filled with hard hits, spectacu lar plays, and many
memories, which the players will cherish for the rest of their lives.
The season started off with a win against a New Mexico school, wh1ch gave the
team the longest winning streak in the state. The team was able to keep the streak for only
one more game. Even though the score board did not indicate the team 's efforts. the team
was filled with talent.
Coach Marty Moon said, "We got off to a good start, but let off later 1n the season. A
few games got away from us, when we should have won them. A lot of underclassmen got
some valuable experience this year, and it should make them better for next year. If we
work hard in the off-season, we can compete for the league title. We have the talent
coming back to do it. It is a matter of following through with action , instead of talk."

Cross country runners are a tough breed of athletes . People may not
realize this because cross country is not as popular as some other sports . In other
sports the games might be canceled because of rain or snow and the participants
are allowed rest time. Not in cross country. The race must go on! Cross country
runners run 5000 kilometers (3.12 miles) as hard as they can , nonstop, for
seventeen to twenty-eight minutes. The practices contained running four miles a
day in hot, cold , rainy, or muddy conditions. During the year of 1997 the boys
went to state as a team and placed eleventh. The girls side took two runners to
state. A heavy snow storm caused the team to make the trip to state twice.

The Wolverine wrestling this year was composed of a vanety of expenenced ano
non-experienced wrestlers. With SIX freshmen. four sophomores. three JUniors. and seven
sen1ors. the season was looking hopeful. The season was already off to a good start w1th a
f1rst place w1n at Shiprock in the first week out. Th1s success cont1nued throughout the
ent1re season. The Aztec Dual brought in a second place finish and another memorable

Not surprising, however still exciting, was the success of Shane Barnes and Aden
Momson. State competition left Shane Barnes with a third place finish. wh1le Aden MomsQr
brought home a first place finish. therefore naming him State Champ1on at 171 pounds.
Th1s season was another great one for the proud wrestlers. According to Coach R1c

Basketball season was full of changes for the Wolverines. A new year, a new
floor and gymnasium to play in, a new coach, new members of the team and a whole
world of new reasons to rise to the occasion.

From the start of the clock to the

sounding of the final buzzer, the teams never gave up. They were a group with ability
and the willingness to work together for the good of all.
Since most of the varsity players graduated, the Wolverine Varsity had to bring
in the hidden talents of the once underclassmen. Starting over was not in the books
for the Wolverines, however, strengthening their attack was. The season was not the
one with the most wins or even the most losses in BHS history, but it was one for the
seniors of '98' to be proud of. Coach Bruce Stell came into the lives and hearts of a
team of young men and helped them rise to their own best level. Whether facing the
hometown rival, Ignacio, or hitting the road to meet Centauri, the Wolverines were

The 1998 baseball season started off slow and finished strong. The team struggled
through non-conference games but shined in conference games. Part of thetr success
was the dominating pitching of Jon Baier and newcomer, Cody Stone. Great defense from
Ryan Howard, Isaac Fleener, and Casey Donahue also helped the cause. Jon Baier led
the team with home runs and RBI's. The team was 8-2 in league games with losses to
Monte Vista and Pagosa. The District Tournament took place on May 2nd in Centauri.
The team had to play Pagosa in the first round, and ended up losing 8-4. The following
players earned All-Conference honors: Jon Baier, Shane Horton , Cody Stone, Peter Lott.
and Isaac Fleener. Jon Baier was also named the Inter mountain League Player of the
Year. "I thought we had a great season and the kids played real well. We played as a
team and played hard," according to first year head coach, James Grentz.

~~Every year we came one step closer, but all I remember is

. .that no matter how close we got, it still seemed so far away. Even
nine months ago it seemed like this year would never end. Now, we
stand here on our final day with so many memories associated with
the place that became our home away from home. A place where
we spent eight hours a day with our other family of friends and mentors. A common ground where together we shared our thoughts ,
our emotions, our pain, our laughs, our tears, and our lives." ~

Pooh (Wendy),
What
a
blessing
you
have been to our
family.
Your
beautiful smile
and happy personality will take
you where you
want to go in this
life. Keep compassion in your
heart for those
that are struggling
in this world. Be true to yourself. We will
always be here for you.
We love you!
Mom and Dad
Grady,

Angelo,
At nine months, you embarked on
your journey on foot.
Today you go forward ...
Because of those first steps that you took
Because we learn as we grow
Because we ultimately reap what we sow
Because we don't always heed "good
advice"
Because we often have to "re-do" things
once or twice
Because we love, in all kinds of weather
Because of all these reasons and more-we'll be proud of you forever!
Love Mom, Mitch, Kyle and Bradley

Upon arriving into our lives
you added joy and
have continued to
do so every today.
The contentment
shown then was
no doubt the
groundworks for
your unending
need to smile and
make
those
around you smile
too. Those breakfast smiles have
paid off!!! We love
you son , and
words can 't express how proud
we are of who you are and what you are to those who
know you. Don't ever lose sight of that. Forever in our

Everyday
of your life has
been and continues to be a
reason to celebrate. You are
an extraordinary
young woman
whose compassion and inner
beauty knows
no bounds. I am
so proud to call
you my daughter, and my
friend.

As you move forward
into this new and exciting
phase of your life, always
remember where you have
been. Go with God's blessing.
Proverbs 9:10
Grandpa and Grandma H.

Dear Joe,
Your family wants you
to know we are very proud of
you. You cannot live life without fear. What is important is
what we do when fear comes.
It is too large of a burden for
us to carry. It would crush us
if we attempt to carry it on our
own. We must trust God.
David penned these words of
God in Psalm 56; uwhen I am
afraid, I will put my trust in
Thee. In God I have put my
trust; I shall not be afraid ."
When fear comes, trust God
and He will carry that burden.
Love you much,
Mom and Dad

Whisty,

Heidi,
Man is that he

have brought us great
joy. Happiness comes
as we learn to make
correct
choices.
Please continue to
make these correct
choices and we promise, you will have eternal happiness. We
are proud of you and
the person you are.
You have been an example to us and we
are thankful for who
you are and who you
represent. Keep up
the good work!
Love,
Mom and Dad

As often as
possible do what others are not doing; go
off-season instead of
on, go in bad weather
instead of good, walk
when others ride,
laugh when others
cry. Keep focused
and you will reach all
of your dreams. It
has been and exciting seventeen years.
You have overcome
and accomplished so
much, we are very
proud of you. Always
remember: "You will
do just fine."
Love you lots,

The year has come and gone. The new school brought
together old friends and new faces. The halls echoed with the
excitement of a bigger, better school and for some the final
year. Students were able to enjoy a bigger library, bigger classrooms, huge gym, a cafetorium, and overall , a spectacular
building. With the new school came different rules, the routine
of classes, good and not so good sport seasons, many activities and great as well as strange events. Students even coped
well with a carbon monoxide leak. All in all it, has been an
amazing year. Memories have been made and stored, never
to be forgotten. The 1997-1998 Wolverine Yearbook has just
':_Scratched the Surface:_ of another year at Bayfield High.
