When entering Bayfield
High School you step into a whole
new world, a world of charisma,
excitement and wonder. You may
not be sure how you got there, but
you'll sure be glad you came. You
see, going to Bayfield High just isn't
a task; it is considered to be a big,
fun-filled and exciting adventure.
Our high school has heard
the words "steppin' up" a lot this
year. What do these words mean to
Bayfield High? Well, for one they
mean stepping up to a classification
of 3A.
Stepping up also applies to
our school because we are the school
that is known for reaching greater
heights. The students here are always found reaching for the stars,
never quiting until they succeed.
Our success can be found on the
court or in the classroom. The
Wolverine Spirit is running wild
through every student here at BHS.
The spirit is definitely "IN THE
HOU-HOUSE!" For the Wolverines,
there are no boundaries, only room
to excel and to step up. The Wolverine is feared in every state, city and
town, even it' every galaxy.

"Homecoming is a time of year
where everyone pulls together
as a school and as classes. All of
the decorations, powderpuff
game, and class competitions are
a great lead into the football game
whether it's in the snow or not."
The football team defeated
the Pagosa Pirates for the
first time since 1983. Although
they did not get to play on their
home court the volleyball team
pl:lyed the Ignacio Bobcats. The
unlucky cross country runners got
snowed out of their meet.

"The 94' Powderpuff game
was the hest ever, since the
upperclassmen of course,
SPANKED the underclassmen,"
Whitney Burrows had to say ahout
the 20-12 win to the seniors and
juniors. It was the first time any
team had ever scored.
The class competitionswater hats, grapefruit pass, spoon
pass, volley hall push, hlanketrace,
tug of war, volleyball games,
powderpuff football-were a lot of
fun. The seniors and juniors tied
with a score of twenty-four. The

Throughout high school a person will meet a great number of
different people. Faces will
come that a person will remember forever, and faces will
come that a person will forget
o er a time period of ten minutes. Do you ever wonder how
many faces you'll remember in
twenty years? Many new faces
have appeared at Bayfield High
School this year. Some of these
people you will become good
friends with. Others you will
never even meet. Why do these
people chose a town that was
barely put on the map? Robbie
Butrymowicz replied, "Where I
use to live the violence was to

growing the violence will soon
be to bad too. Soon new faces
wont even be noticed.

As you walk through the
mighty halls of BHS, you might
notice that there is a wide selection of people. There are so
many groups here that one can
never be bored. In the small
town environment, most everyone knows your name and
usually most people don't have
problems. Here at Bayfield we
all do different things. Some
play sports, some are involved
in after-school activities, and
somejusthavefunnotinschool.
Whatever we do, we are having

CLOTHES. The top priority on almost every teenagers
mind. At least those who care
about what they look like, and
what teenager does not. At
Bayfield High School there are
a wide variety of styles and
looks worn by different people.
The e styles are anything from
bell-bottoms and Doc Martins
to Wranglers and snake skin
cowboy boots. Of course, there
is always the BHS Dance Team
uniforms. VERY flashy indeed!
With so many people corning
from different areas, there are
many eye catching outfits that
circulate the halls of Bayfield

though, those who say money

never be forgotten .. . even
when they are gone. Cayle
McCormick was a friend to
many of us. Most people
would say "He was one of the
coolest kids I have ever
known. " He was a good athlete, a good student and a
caring person. Showing how
much they care about Cayle,
students at BHS have remembered him in many
ways. Several of the sports
teams wore his initials on
their uniforms and the senior
class painted "CM" on the
water tower instead of
"95" .Each person has their
own special memories of
Cayle. One thing is sure and
constant though. .. We will
always love him.

SENIOR
CLASS SONG
"Friends "
Packing up the dreams God planted
In the fertik soil of you.
Can't believe the hopes he's granted
Means a chapter in your life is through.
But we'll keep you close as always
It won't even seem you've gone
Cause our hearts in big and small ways
Will keep the love that keeps us strong.

Only as high as I can reach can I grow.
Only as far as I seek can I go.
Only as deep as I look can I see.
Only as much as I dream can I be.

And friends are friends forever
If the Lord's the Lord of them
And afriend will not say never
Cause the welcome will not end.
Though it'shard to let you go,
In the father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long
To live as friends
With the faith and love God's given
Springing fromthe hope we know
We will pray the joy you 'lllive in
Is the strengths that now you show
But we'll keep you close, as always
It won't even seem you've gone.
Cause our hearts in big and small ways
Will keep the love that keeps us strong.
And friends are friends forever
If the Lord's the Lord of them
And afriend will not say never
Cause the welcome will not end.
Though it's hard to let you go,
In the father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long
To live as friends.
No a lifetime's not too long
To live as friends.

Find Themselves
Making an Impact on BHS
''I have enjoyed
my Junior year," said
Erin Anglin, "but it is
scary because I only
have one year left and I
cannot picture my self
on my own yet." Many
of the class members
agreed with Erin.
However, there were
those
who
were
prepared to get out and
make an impact.
Whether it was sports
or academics, this class
triumphed over all the
etbacks to get the job
done and done right.
Junior Prom was one of

the activities that
overwhelmed
the
members. The class
decided to put on the
best prom that Bayfield
High School had ever
een. In order to achieve
this they did concessions
and the Halloween
Carnival. This class
made
quite
an
impression on student
life.
Mrs. Milner
said,' 'This class is filled
with quality and funfilled people. We are
going to be hearing alot
about this class for years
to come.''

What do you get
when you cross school
clowns, exceptional students, outstanding athletes, and very friendy

sophomore class of 199495. This class grew in
leaps and hounds as individuals. When asked if
she were ready for upperclassmen life, Kim
McGuire said, "It's scary
to think that I will have
only two more year to get
my self together."
This last year the
sophomore class did accompli. h a few things.

In academics they were
very compctetive and
hrnught home many of
the awards given by
teachers. In athletics,
several of the students
went to state and placed
well. Such sports were
track, wrestling, and basket hall. There were even
those that made all-conference teams. In the way
of extra curricular acti v1 ties. they were
strong as well. Bayfield
High School is proud to
have this class a part of
its history.

A New Group of
Steppin' Up to Bay High
It wasn't as easy as
changing a diaper,
but big changes
carne to the freshman this year. As
hard as it was the
freshman got their
share of experiences. They made
friends or tried to
stay out of the
u pperclassrnan 's
way. They all stuck
in their own little
groups, but their
determinations
kept' ern going.
One of the big
changes the freshman faced this year
was the schedule.

Coming from the 8
period to the 4 period day, Ashley
Catron said," Its
easier and makes
the days feel short."
The other was that
the initiation was
revived.Even
though it was rough
getting tied to a flag
pole or gettiing a
toilet twirl, the
freshman still had
that Bayfield High
School spirit. As we
know it was hard
being a feshman,
keep your head up
and the years will
go by easy.

The sports teams thi. year
proved that a little hustle goes a
long way. The immediate victories of football and cross country
started the year off on the right
foot. Many fans joined to support each team.
Spmts has always been
emphasized in Bayfield, and this
year's teams will always be notable for all their hard work. "I
enjoy playing sporl~ because I
have worked so hard with people
since seventh grade. This year
we all had the chance to play
together," said Royale Da' about
her senior year sports experience.
As the cheerleaders
screamed their way through every game, so did the tudents,
faculty, and the numerou fans.
Knowing that everyone was hehind them, the athletes gave all
they had to make their hometown
proud. Despite the injury etbacks, each team came together,
worked harder, and did what they
could. They made a point to
make the 1994-95 year a memorable one.

Having six seniors, a
league championship last year,
and only loosing two players to
graduation, the 1994 season
looked to be full of great
promises for the Wolverine
volleyball team. Or what
should have been a promising
season. "This season was a
waste of a lot of talent. With six
seniors that have been playing
together for six years, we should
have gone a lot further." said
senior Leigha Natzke.
The team faced many
downfalls during the season.

Everything they needed was
there, but for some reason the
girls just could not grab a win.
While fighting to find just what
was missing, the team faced
their most toughest components with all they had- DEDICATION! The Wolverines stold
a victory from the long time
rival, the Ignacio Bobcats.
Along the way other wins carne
from the Mancos Bluejays and
the Pagosa Springs Pirates.
At Districts the Wolverines faced Centauri. The girls
carne out fighting but could not

pull off the win that was most
important. They left the gym
knowing that they would never
play together again. One thing
the team learned from this season is that you have to work for
what you want for yourself, not
for other people. Sometimes
those other people just don't
want it as bad as you do.

At the beginning of the
eason, nobody ever thought
this team could ever lose.
However, they learned about
defeat the hard way, and their
dreams were crushed at one
crucial moment. The team
started off with a bang. No
team could get past their rapid
offense and destructing defense. They demolished
Shiprock and were pumped
up for their game against San
Juan. During this game,
quarterback Marchall Hahn
got injured. The team did not
let down and ended up winning 35-21. Hahn healed, carne
back, and brought this strong
team together again.
What the team did not
realize was that there was a
time for winning and a time
for losing. Bayfield's first de-

feat was against Salida. It was
a battle of turnovers and defense . Their winning streak
began again until one of their
most important games against
Monte Vista. Bayfield was
winning 3-0 until the last
minute of the fourth quarter.
Monte Vista then made a
questionable touchdown.
Their hopes for the playoffs
were shattered.
Overall, the season was
a miraculous one. Even
though they did not get as far
as they hoped, the town was
very proud of them. The team
will lose some very outstanding seniors, but their remaining talents are hopeful for next
year.

Your job, as a cheerleader, is
successful.
At the beginning of the year, no
one knew what to expect from a
young squad.
People were
wondering if it would be up to the
task. Things started rocky when
plan. did not tum out quite right.
But, suddenly things started
falling into place at all the right
times. All expectation were met
when even the fre. hmen stepped
up to the task during homecoming
games. At the beginning of the

football game against Pagosa,
many people thought the
cheerleaders would not be there,
considering the rain and snow.
Amatingly, to everyone's delight,
they arrived, many even without
their warm uniforms.
Now, with a pro. pering squad
of three freshmen and five
sophomores, Captain Mandi

expecting a lot." Considering the

Young Promising S

The music blares in his head as
the lone combatant prepares for
battle. Lost in his thoughts he antiCip..ttes his opponents every move
and rehearses his own attack. A his
time approaches. he is quiet and
I ocused. He steps into the circle to
face his opponent as well as himself. One thought consumes him to
defeat the other man in the ring.
Wrestling is very different from
any other sport. It is only yourself
and your opponent. If you lo e you
can only blame yourself, and if you
win you're the only one who can
take the credit. Each wre. tler has a
different expectation. "To place in
every tournament and win state."
according to Cody Duran. The best
part about the season was practicing for the state tournament. "After
It is over you can eat as much a you
want~ " The ~ restlers went into the
state tournament with very high
hopes. "I was a little disapointed
with how they wrestled there, but
we are still young and will be back
in force~" Coach Edwards. They
entered the tournament and ranked
fourth in state.
A wrestler has to have the right
attitude. Coach Edwards can teach

them moves and make them stronger, but unless they were willing to
get in and rough it up, he can not
help the attitude.
The practice were killers.
Wrestlers were in the best hape of
anyone around. They never lost because they were out of condition. In
order for a practice to be effective,
it must be intense. Practice. were
close to three hour long and they
were every weekday. In practice,
wrestlers did a lot of running. They
drill move like crazy and also did a
lot of free wrestling. "That when
done right is a war." aid Coach
Edwards. Winning in wrestling is a
very personal matter. Wrestling i a
lonely sport, it is just you out there
on the mat. Each wrestler has their
own way of dealing with losses as
well a. winnings. "I was just there
to make sure they were ready and
had the chance." Coach Edwards.
The future is very bright. They
are still very young, and they can
challenge for a state title next year.

"Even though we didn't

was not that good. I think our
team was one of the best in the
state", said senior Kali Beck.
When you play like a
championship team in practice
and at a few games you know
you are good hut, every team has
their off days. With this team
they had off days at the worst
possible times.
Girls var, ity ended up
with a seven and twelve record,
although this record does really
not show the talent that these
young ladies had. Thi team had
their own unique qualities which
enabled them to stand out from
any other team.
"We were all friends. We
got along really well so we had
fun while we played. Even if we
lost we still had fun while on the
court," said sophmore Jess

Macklin.
Coach Mick McDermott
said, "I have alot of young ladies
on this team. I think we can pull
this team together in a couple of
years and take it all the way to
state."
There was a shortage of
dedicated seniors on the team this
year. There was only five senior,
on the varsity team. "It takes alot
of dedicated eniors to get a team
up and going. They needed to he
there to get the team'. moral
boosted and their energy going",
said senior Luiza Fritz.
Predictions of a championship are in the near future for
the Lady Wolverines. It takes
alot of blood, sweat, and tears to
be a championship team. In the
year to come these ladies will be
steppin up to victory, above and
beyond.

Squad Relies On

Prepared! This is the word that
describes the Wolverines. The
hoys' varsity started out with four
wins in a row, including first place
at the Wolf Creek Classic. The
young players had fire in their eyes
hut not enough to stop the Shiprock
Chieftains. The los, was a rude
awakening for this young squad. It
sparked a five-game winning
streak; heaten were teams like Aztec, Mancos, and Monticello. When
the Ignacio game rolled around,
the varsity team was unsuccessful
in heating its arch-rival. "The
Bayfield players were intimidated
and had fear in their eyes as they

walked out of the locker room, "
said Coach Butch Prior. After
recovering from this devastating
loss, the Wolverines went on another streak and won six in a row,
vindicating the Ignacio loss. Even
with the rivalry at itli peak, the
Wolverines would not let anything
outside of basketball come between them and victory. At the
end of the regular season, theW olverines ended up with fifteen wins
and three losses. With district
just around the corner, the Wolverines were becoming more
Prepared than they had been all
season. The first game was against

the Salida Spartans, Bayfield won
81 -77. The next game would he
the biggest test for thts team, the
Buena Vista Demons. The Demons were victorious ~l ver
Bayfield after outscoring them in
the second quarter 10 7. Buena
Vista then went on to take the state
title. With Baytield moving up a
class in sports, it still shows that
the team can dominate its opponents in haskcthall. The J .V. and
C teams both finished the season
with winning records of 10-7.
These hoys will he assured of future success because they are
Prepared.

BHS Faculty Members Take It

ONE STEP AT A TIME
As the time approached, the
Bayfield High School faculty
prepared for the task at hand.
For most it was a routine job; but
for the new faculty members it
was the beginning of a year in a
new school. o matter how long
the faculty member has been a
part of B.H.S. they took their first
steps on September 6.
A major issue the faculty had
to deal with was the growing
number of students.
Some

teachers taught classes in the
cafeteria and library, while others
had to move from room to room.
The school district purchased two
double-wide
trailers
for
additional classroom space. The
trailers were put into use in
November.
The faculty of B.H.S. showed a
genuine care and commitment to
the student body.
What
disappointed the faculty most
was, as Mrs. Haga put it, "Some

of our students choosing the
wrong path in life when they have
so much potential." Not only
does the faculty care for their
students, they care for each other.
Like Mrs. Conner said, "The staff
at B.H.S. is like one big happy
family--we all get along so well."
The job that the B.H.S. faculty
does involves a lot of work, and
by taking it one step at a time
they got things done.

CLIMB TO HIGHER PEAKS
Bayfield High School gets
larger and larger each year.
This year was no exception.
The students started their
year with a lot more
classmates and classes then in
previous years. Among the
new classes that were added
are
the
following:
environmental
science,
drama, housing, crafts,
creative
writing,
and
painting.
As the school grew, so did
the chance for students to

-

learn. Students were able to
take more challenging classes
and experience learning in a
ariety of new ways. Being
able to learn in new ways
gives the student more desire
to learn; therefore, more
tudents are in class.
Classes were placed
wherever they could fit. This
year a bond issue was passed
allowing
a
new
and
improved school to be built.
Construction started early in
1995. This year's sophomores

should be in the new school
in time to graduate. With
the new school will come
more classes and there will be
room for incoming students.
With all the new
improvements and classes it
is evident that Bayfield is
growing and its schools are
getting better and better.

Or Where Ever We Ma
FUN? Is it possible to have
fun in Bayfield? Most people
say so. People are easily found
having fun in Bayfleld, but
people don't like to hang out
in Bayfield all the time so they
roam to other places such as
Durango, avajo,Farrnington, and many other hot
spots. Some people prefer to
just kick it at horne or at a
friend's house. No matter
what they like to do chances
are they are having fun doing
it. So next time your stuck at
horne bored don't whine, no
one wants to hear it. Get off
your duff and go do something. There is lots of stuff to
do here, after all this is one of
the hotest vacationing spots
so if all these tourists come
here there must be something
they come here to do. If you
still can't find something to do
you could always go pick up
on those tourists.

What do an all girls choir

Preparing for the future

She's right! Men and

Does anybody know what
"Spring Fling" actually means?
Well, to everybody who attended
the games and the dance on April
2 I st, it meant fun, games, and a
chance to kick hack and relax.
By the end of the long school day
the student council had set up a
list of games for everyone to
participate in. The senior clas
won overall, hut all the cia ses
were close.
For all great dances, there
is always a good theme. "Captured In A Dream" was the theme
for this 11ing. Especially for the
king and the queen, Cody
Abernathy and Rachel Crossman.
When the festivals died
down and the music stopped, the
party may have ended, but the
memories of it lasted on, and will
continue to do. o in the minds of
all who attended. Perhaps this is
the meaning of "Spring Fling".

What a difference a year can
make. 1994 saw the Bayfield Wolverines end the ha. chall season with
a 5-10 record. Early in the 1995
season Bayfield had already topped
last years record with an 8-3 record.
In their first game of the season,
BHS swept the Durango frosh team.
"Our team played well for the first
game we had alot of fun," replied
short stop and pitcher Mike
Smithwick.
Playing rival Ignacio is always
the mo t exciting game for any
Bayfield team. Thi year' team
had uccessful victories over Ignacio
at the Cortez tournament beating
them 15-12 and playing a double
against them winning 10-4 and 9-6.
Overall Bayfield ended the
season with a 10-8 record. When
a ked ahout the season, Reggie
Sanchez replied "We were alot better than most people thought we
would he". Coach Anderson quoted
that he was "very pleased with their
effort".

S weat ... P ain . . . Endless practices under broiling sun
or driving rain. What would
possess a sane person to subject
himself to this torture? Would
you believe it's a small man in
polyester pants and his trusty
sidekick? Well, believe it or not,
Coach Vernon Kimball and Asistant Coach Rebecca Miller
teamed up as the biggest driving
force behind BHS tracksters this
year.
In Bayfield's longest track
season ever, these coaches
pushed their athletes through
three months of terrible weather.
Of the conditions, Coach Kimball
said,"They were definitely not the
most enjoyable I've ever seen.
When it wasn't raining, it was
snowing or blowing. The sun
was a rare sight indeed. But I
don't think that was a big disadvantage to us because most of
the other teams throughout the
state suffered through similar
conditions."

What is prom? Prom is
a special night for those
priviliged enough to be
called juniors and se' niors. The prom is a
night out for students to
dance and then, if the
school is providing an
after prom party, have a
little fun kicking back for
the last few hours of the
everung.
There is more to prom
then some people might
trunk, It takes a tremendous amount of effort by
students and staff alike.
Before prom you have to
decide on the perfect
place and a time that is
convenient for everyone,
The budget is also a
problem. It takes a lot of
hard work to raise
enough money to buy
decorahons, the D.J. and
other things that have
always made prom
spectacular. After all of
tlus is figured out students can have fun
dancing and enjoying
what has been done to
make the night perfect.

Bayfield Students Do Even More,

STEPPIN' UP TO THE CHALLENGE
There is an effort that
very few people make. This
effort includes committment,
patience, and will. Quite a few
students at Bayfield have
shown this effort. What does it
take to make students like
these? Well, it may be different
for everyone. For some the effort rna y be natural. You know
the type, never studied a day in
their lives, and yet have never
gotten a "B" (well maybe one).
Othershavespongebrains. This
is the case when students soak
up information, that soon
drains. These students often
have hard nights studing.
Sometimes the sponge decides
to squeeze dry too early and is
left with anxiety and frustration. The third kind of people
are the "Duh" kind. These
people can choose to ex cell, but
sometimes don't. No matter
the type, everyone has the
ability to be a great student.
The people featured in these
pages are ones who should be
commended for their outstanding work. The following
awards are given to all types.
Congratulations to all the
people who put the extra foot
foward to earn these awards.

VALEDICTORIAN
Kali Beck has eared the honor as
valdictorian of the etas of 1995.
She has been very active
throughout her high school
years~ and kept a high grade average. She will attend chool at
the University of Wyoming
where she will majorin busines
and accounting.

SALUTATORIAN
Salutatorian Rachel
man has only been a student at BHS for two years, yet
she ha been a great addition to
it Rachel's hard work didn't
just .:ome easy. Extra work and
df!dication has been her key to
success. Rachel hopes .to atrend St. Ambrose University
