A DAY OF THE LIFE AT
BHS!!!
Homecoming 1993 was
a time that will be remembered
by all. The weeks fe tivities
included dre -up day , bonflre,
and powder-puff football which
was scoreless for the second year
in a row. Finally, the big game.
The Lady Wolverines smashed
the Nucla Mustangs in two
games. Later that afternoon the
football team defeated the Center
Vikings. At halftime the king
and queen cantidates lined up on
the field and waited for the

announcement. The tand
became quite, and Dan Ford
announced, "The queen i ....
Corinne Wilmer. " The new
queen exclained, "Oh my go h!"
Then, "The king is... Robert
Walker." Robert turned to the
other guy and said incerely,
"Sorry guys." The week's
festivities and spirit shown by
students and teachers made
Homecoming 93 a success.

BHS 1993 FALL
This year's 1993 fall
sports season at BHS was
"outstanding!", said athletic
director Tom Horton, when
asked about the fall sports
seasons.
The Cross Country
team set the pace, qualifying
five girls for state competition. At state, they placed fifth
overall. The boys' team,
comprised of freshmen and
sophmores, showed promise
for up-comming years.
Volleyball got off to a

rocky start, but finished as coleague champions. 'Three lady
Wolverines made the allconfrence team.
Football kicked off the
season forcefully and kept it
going to a record of 8 wins
and only 2 losses. Coach
Keirns was named Coach of
the Year and nine players
made all-confrence.
Through it all were the
cheerleaders, cheering
through every exhilarating
win and devastating defeat.

SETTING HIGH SIGHTS
BHS Cheerleaders
The Bayfield High
School cheerleaders led theway
for the Wolverine teams with
their high spirited and uplifting
attitudes. They did everything
they could to get the crowd up
and cheering even if it was with
candy or by doing the "Baby
Shark" cheer. When the team
was dowwn they did their best
to pick up the spirit, and get the
&ayers in a get going, just do it,
winning kind of attitude.

s

At the begining of the
games the cheerleaders al~ys
had banners or thing for the
team to run through. To get the
team spirits uplifted. The
smiling faces would be enough
to cheer anyone up, but this
squad always comtributed
more. A lot of hard work and
determination was put into this
years cheerleading squad. With
out them BHS would not be
what it is.

WHAT YOU GIVE IS
Bumping, setting and spiking is
not all that made up the
Wolverine Volleyball team. It
was a group of dedicated girls,
who put forth all their energy
and effort to be the best they
could at every practice and
game. Though losing every
match
in
the
Ignacio
Tournament slowed them
down a little, they didn't quit.
With thier spirits lifted
they were able to defeat several
teams and take a second place.
The Varsity team had a great
season ending with a 8-13
record along with a Co-League

Championship that they shared
with Dolores.
This years JV team was
very successful, the girls played
well and worked hard together
and had a great season, ending
with a 4-7 record.
The C team started out
with a 6 and 0 record but by the
end of the season thier spirits
began to deteriorate. They
ended thier season with a 6-6
record. Overall stretching thier
spirit and determination on the
court, the ladies gained all they
gave.

The Boys of the Summer
Became the Men of the Season
Like a blazing rocket,
the 1993 football season took
off, and just as the beautiful
tail began to string out behind
it, it ran right into a brick wall.
This was, however, the best
season that the Wolverines
have ever had.
There were nine seniors
on the varsity team this year.
In fact, this year's senior class
has won more games(28) than
any other class in the history
of BHS. Brad Hoback was the
leading scorer on the team with
13 touchdowns.
Winning their first
game, against Farmington, set
the Wolverines off to a good
start. Their second game, with
Pagosa Springs, was a loss

which held them back, but not
for long. The next seven games
were successes. Including
beating Ignacio for the fourth
straight time, which has never
been done before.
With a regular season
record of 8-1, the mighty
Wolverines went into the
playoffs where they devistated
Del Norte, 19-9. Next, Bayfield
was the host of the state quarter
finals for the first time.
Bayfield held on strong and
put up a good fight against
Cederedge, but wound up
losing 34-12.
All in all this was one
awesome season and our guys
deserve great praise for their
extraordinary efforts.

Brother Richard fired
them up, the volleyball team
fired them out, the crosscountry team burned them
up, and the football team
blew them away. The 1993
fall sports season was another
outrageous year for the
Bayfield Wolverines.
The volleyball team did
an excellent job as they
stormed their way through
the season and became the
league Co-champions.
The cross-country team
did fabulous for only their
second year. Not only did
they get third at regionals,
but had five state qualifiers
on the girls tea~ . They ended
the season with fifth place at
state.
The football team did
very well this year. Contributing to this success were more
players than ever, and a
bigger coaching staff. They
were undefeated League
Champions, and were State
Quarterfinalists.

BELIEVING AND ACHIEVING!
Who cares about
academics? How many
students actually think
about what they are
learning every day in high
school? Most students are
here to have fun with their
friends or use up time.
There are,
of
course, many students
who try to learn and
excel. They are the
people who will control
the world in the future.
Their less motivated peers,
however, do not see it
that way .. So, what do
you think?
What do
academics mean to the
students at BHS?

FUTURE BUSINESS
Big Businesss in FBLA
FB LA stands for Future
Business Leaders of America.
This year it has been filled
with goals and expectations
from the students. Robert
Walker describes it this way,
"FBLA is an awesome and
academically challenging
experience!" This year there
were fourty-five members of
FBLA. "Our group keeps
growing and growing and the
students keep working harder
and harder. It is a pleasure to
wok with the BHS FBLA

members!", says Denise Haga,
club sponsor.
While students learn
about the business world they
are also learning how to
compete and meet deadlines.
FBLA members are taught
valuable skills that will help
them throughout the rest of
their lives. That's a reassuring
note to any parent or student.
If ther were ever a club to join
it would probably be this one
because you get to learn a lot
while you have fun!

STEPPIN' UP AT BHS
New classes mean new directions
at Bayfield High. While aerobics
directs its students to down a path
of life-long fitness, aerospace
sends you soaring to a new
tomarrow. Aerospace, taught by
Mr. Robert Mann, has done everything from launching rockets,
to flying airplanes at Animas airpark. Aerobics, taught by Mrs.
Beckler has gone from"Buns of
Steel" to riding bikes and
rollerblading. Some of the harder
classes at B.H. S. are Calculas,
College Prep English, and Physics. Taught by some of the hardest
and best teachers at Bayfield.
There are also more relaxed classes,
these classes give the students time
to take a break from the stress of
more demanding courses. We are
in are in our fourth year on the
split schedule, this gives the students more time to focus on these
classes. Which the results are better grades and a better learning
experience.

Clockwise: Royale Da'
works hard in Mr. Edwards
class. Aaron Hendrix tries
to complete another
assignment. Mrs. Jones
demonstrates the use of
electricity. Erin Anglin
looks stunned about all her
work. Andy and Fred light
a rocket from Aero Space.

Clockwise: Bobbie Grimes finrshes
an assignment before class. Bart
Miller can't figure out ·what he is
suposed to do. Mrs . Cashio helps
her fellow students. The weights
class does a little floor exercises.
Mr Prior takes over Mrs. Becklers
Aerobics class.

THE YOUNG GUNS OF BHS
Youth Movement Energizes the WWF
ot a Senior to be found.
Looking around you can spot a
couple of Sophmores, two or
three Juniors, and a dozen
Freshmen, but no Seniors. o
this is not a gathering of underclassmen, this is a wrestling
practice. The youth movement
has begun in the Wolverine
Wrestling Federation as the
team braces for a step up to 3A
classification. 22 wrestlers hit
the mat at various times, but
not one Senior. Many coaches
would bemoan the fact, but
Coach Edwards viewed the
prospect with enthusiasm.
"We are the youngest
team around. Everyone will be
back next year and with 12
Freshmen we will be a force to
be dealt with." said an obviously pleased Coach Edwards.
As young as they were,
the Wolverines were still very
competitive. Although it was
tough to win a dual because of
the lack of upper weights, they
stacked up well against other
teams. With as many as eight
freshmen wrestling varsity at
one time the WWF still complied a respectable 146-126 team
record.

State Champion at 119
lbs. Marshall Hahn led the pack.
His overtime victory over Richie
Cal don of Sanford in the state
finals, ended the season for the
Wolverines on an extremaly
persuasive vote. Marshall was
the only freshman to win a title
at any weight class in the state.
Ryan Hunt capped off a great
year with a 5th place state finish. Sophmore, Cody Duran,
switched from Basketball to
Wrestling and was regional
champion at 125. Cody won
several matches at state and
came so close to placing.
Sophmore, Clayton Wilson,
(130), and Junior, Micha
Chamblee, (140) also made the
trip to state. Junior, Ryan
Powell, (145), Sophmore, Josh
Homer, (171), Freshman, Steve
Wiliams, (150), Olan Morrison,
(152), Jesse Cummins, (135), and
Judd Jenkins, (130) made up the
varsity, while Dusty Mars,
Miguel Gomez, Jeremy Sours,
and Kane Vette contributed to
J.V.
The overall prospects of
the team looks great as they
move up to a new class, but the
move won't slow them down.

The Lady
Wolverines carne back in
the second half to win the
game 45 to 37 against the
Mancos Bluejays. This
broke their nine-game
losing streak. This was a
happy day for the Lady
Wolverines.
The Lady
Wolverines had two
players foul out, Royale
Da', and Kris Morrison,
but that did not discourage
them from winning the
game.
The two lead
scorers for that game were

Kali Beck with 20 points ,
and Luiza Fritz with 8
points.
There were many
tears shed after the game.
They dreamed of this day
and celebration victory. It
did not matter if they lost
another game after
winning this one. They
had the desire to win this
game, and they did.
This year the varsity
team is made up of three
seniors, six juniors, one
sophomore, and two

freshmen.
The Lady
Wolverines have not had a
good season. They have
only won 4 games. They
have played extremely
well for only winning 4
games.
The
Lady
Wolverines had it in their
heart that they were going
to play in Districts. That
dream was shattered. The
Lady Wolverines lost by 9
points. They were very
disappointed, but they go
to the boys's game to cheer
them on to victory.

There is thirty econds
left in the game, and Bayfield is
up by 5 point against Ignacio.
The buzzer goes of~ and the
Bayfield Wolverines win the
game 50 to 45 because they
blinded their opponents with
their bright fluorescent bandaids.
o one in the history of
high school ba ketball has ever
played with band-aids on his
face, arm, or leg. This is the new
trend for the 1994 Wolverine
boys basketball team.
They
wear
them
anywhere and everywhere that
they find to place them. A for
Dion Phelps, well, he wears
them on the back of hi
basketball shoes.
Robert
Walker wears one on his

what happened, he'll probably

ay that Brad Hoback took him
out during the game. The team
ays that the band-aids bring
them good luck; so far, they are
right.
This year the varsity
team is made up of eight seniors,
one junior, and two freshmen.
They have come far to achieve
their dreams.
The Wolverines played
Dove Creek for the first game at
Districts. They stomped Dove
Creek 73 to 35. They played
Mancos for the second game. The
Wolverines were up by one at
half -time. The score was 33 to
32. The Wolverines and the
Bluejays were tied 51 to 51, then
Dion Phelp was fouled by Ben
Ellis. It would have been Ellis's
fifth foul, but his friend (Joey
Bled oe) took the foul for him.
They lost the game by 7 points.

The Wolverines had the
championship was pull out
right out from under them. The
refs were not fair at all. The
final score was 59 to 52. Their
off to Palisade for Regionals.
They played West Grand and
they played a good
game. The Wolverines came
back in the third quarter to take
the lead 43 to 42. They had
three players foul out in the
fourth quarter. They lost by 6
points. The final score was 66 to
72.
The JV and the C team
played a good season the year.
They both had their ups and
downs. Overall the season went

was

goofballs all over, some
bookworms, and even a

This
school has them all. No,
they cannot be duplicated.
These students stand alone.

A SIGHT TO SEE
And Much, Much More
BHS Faculty, HMMM. .. this
small phrase, I'm sure brings
many things to mind but we'll
just stick towhatis allowed.The
faculty at BHS is growing more
and more each year. This year
there were a few new additions
to the team. Alice Bauman
helped Mrs Merica! out with a
few of her English classes. Unfortunately she was only a student teacher so her stay was not
too long. Alice's unique style of
teaching made her students
have fun while they learned,

and not many teachers provide
this combination! Beverly Hott
teamed up with Mrs. Haga and
together they taught the majority of the computer classes offered at BHS. Althought Mr.
Dugger was no linger a part of
BHS, his abscence was made up
for by the new science teacher,
Tina Jones.So we've displayed
this unique arrangement of
teachers from Bayfield High
School, and hopefully, they're
here to stay!!

Mrs. Blatnick wanders the halls just
looking for trouble.

Juniors: Lost In Space
Everyone wants to be
an upperclassman and the
junior class has finally made
it. The constant thought in
their minds is: only one more
year and we are gone! The
junior class consists of
cowboys, weirdos, jocks, and a
lot of semi-normal people
too. All of which have bright
and original personalities.
They have come a long way
in the past eleven years. They
have all finally gotten cars
(although a lot of them have
various scrapes and dents).

Bucky Taylor's advice to all
juniors, "A vehicle has tires
that should remain on the
ground not in the air.n
The junior class is
famous for their crazy abilit}
to have fun. According to
Tasha Mrasak, going to
Bayfield High School has been
"a new
and
unusual
experience because it is so
small." The junior class has
been through alot, but have
remained a close group of
friends who will, no doubt,
succeed in life.

Evan Suprenant knows the Junior class is number 1!!

OUT TO GETCHA!
Freshman 1994
Countdown, Freshmen!
Only three more years and were
outta here. This ever unique class
has so much to offer the real
world once we get out. But don't
get your hopes up, we have a
while.
What's the best thing about
being a Freshman?lt has to be
new friends, new teachers, and
finally getting out of the Midschool. Yes, but what's the worst
thing about being a Freshman?
Definitely being at the bottom of
the social stack once again, and
walking down the hall hoping no

big Senior is ready to give you
the "Initiation".
This class is surely one of
the best to ever come through
BHS, so how do you describe
them? Brilliant? Ambitious?
Out of the ordinary? Or just
plain awesome. You make the
choice. We have a lot to look
forward to in the near future,
like more respect and best of all,
getting our drivers license.
Whatever each of us decides
to do with our lives, the world
better get ready, 'cause the class
of 1997 is out to make it big!

BELIEVING IN CHANGE
The 1994-93 year gave rememberance to ev.('ryone.
New faces came to peoples attention, and faces disappeared
that we will probably never see again. New artists stormed to
the tops of the music charts, and some fell in defeat. Michael
Jackson faced a prison term, and Snoop Doggy Dog wondered
of he would ever get out.
Change was one of the main issues of this year. Many
people brought happiness to others, while other lives were
destroyed by the worlds faults. The changes of 93-94 brought
good and bad for the people. One thing that was learned
thought is that you always gotta believe.
Forty seconds that shook Los
Angeles caused an estimated thirty
billion dollars in damage.

Michael jackson faced his downfall as he was accused of sexually
assulting a young boy.
