Bonfires, Bullies, and

According to the local burger
stand, it was a few "bad eggs."
Some of you might know what we
are talking about; others have just
had to live with the fact that
Homecoming
1991
was
cancelled. The week started off
great with five dress-up days,
people preparing for the bonfire,
and the water towers getting
painted a different number every
other night. Spirit was high for the
games on Saturday, and
everyone's faces were painted on
Friday in honor of the Wolverines.
The night before, it is said that
things got a little out of hand.
Friday sent the Student Council
into the classes of BHS with the
news that the festivities were off.
Have we learned any lessons?
Well, let's just say that we don't
have another homecoming for this
year's senior class, but with all of
the smarts we've gained this year,
let's leave the B. B. guns and bats
at home come next September's
celebration.

It's a Beautiful Day for a Football Game ...
Every one left the
Homecoming game with one
side of his face a little pinker
than the other, but who wants
to miss the Bayfield Bad Boys
chalk
up another
victory?
Going into the game with a
perfect record of 3-0, the team
was fired up and ready to come
out on top.
And that they did.
Helping lead the Wolverines to a
26-12 win over the Center
Vikings was senior Walker
Taylor with one touchdown run,
freshman Joey Serrano with two
touchdown runs and a two point

conversion play, and senior
Dominick Martinez with the
final touchdown of the game.
And how could this team
survive without the spirit of the
cheerleaders cheering and
chanting from the sidelines? It
didn't take much to keep the
crowd excited over the game, but
we'd all be like a fish out of
water without their support.
Congratulations to both for
helping save a little bit of
Homecoming 1991--we all know
we needed a little picker-upper
after the big cancellation!

the Wolverines apart from the
crowd.

Feelings of
anticipation, along
with anxiety, filled
the minds of the 1992
juniors. This year
was exciting, full of
danger (for some of
us), and an awesome
introduction
to
authority!
Who
would believe that
we would make it
this far? Certainly
not the teachers or
even ourselves.
It can most
definitely be said
that competition and

pride are traits that
are deeply engrained
in
this
class.
Especially
academically and
sport wise. As Nancy
McCoy put it, "I think
our class is full of
talent
and
enthusiasm." This is
the baddest class
Bayfield will ever
see, and they have
one more year to
prove it again. This
group is now ready
to be listened to.

... out of control
The class of 1994 is definatley one of the most
colorful groups to enchant Bayfield High
School in many years. Some may classify
them as wretched little monsters, but what do
those substitute teachers know about the true
selves behind the vivacious class anyway?
"We are the class of star basketball players,
excellent drivers and devious con-artists,"
boast Kristina Cordova and Rebecca Kahlil.
It is O.K. to be a little bit out of control. BHS
needs somebody to animate the halls and keep

This year's freslunen may have taken a lot of
flak from the upper-classmen, but they weren't
bothered by the many comments. They still went out
for sports and clubs offered at BHS. Each who tried,
enjoyed what he was doing.
The freslunen were not only successful in clubs
and sports, but in making good grades throughout the
year and contributing to each of their classes in a unique
way. Their teachers were all proud of their efforts.
As the new kids at BHS, the freshmen still
kept their lively attitudes gained at BMS. Mrs.
Mericle agreed, "Freshmen are energetic, enthusiastic,
unpredictable, fresh (interpret for yourself), fun, and
fantastic. · And they stayed this way throughout the
year by helping to add to the one of a kind spirit at
BHS.
The start of the year didn't come easy for the
freshmen. They had to get used to the 4-period day
and the 15 minute breaks in between classes. Most of
the freslunen thought that it was easier than the old 7period day. "It is a lot easier to get good grades because
you don't have homework in seven classes, • said Cody
Abernathy.
They also enjoyed the pep rallies, because
there were no pep rallies at the mid school. At first
they had no idea what was going on, but caught on
quickly and learned how to spell F-R-E-5-H-M-E-N.
Over all it was a good year for the freslunen.

dedication .•••
Through the laughter and tears,
the faculty and staff at B.H.S. is not
only dedicated to their jobs, but also to
the school. Our faculty and staff,
although they push us to get
everything done on time, is a very
caring group of people. No matter
what is going on within the student
body, some part of the faculty or staff
has been there to support the students.
All they have done for the students,
wether it's helping them prepare for
college or getting ready to enter the
armed forces, somehow they have
been able to remain sane, and barely
keep the building standing up-right.
Even through the changes that have
taken place in B.H.S.,everyone seems
to pull together and work as a team,
and without the great staff that we
have, at times that would be pretty
hard.

this school the 4-period day
was in effect, and the
students were getting the
best grades they had gotten
in years. The many elective
courses available kept the
interest high. The highly
challenging courses and the
great fun made the students
want to learn. This made
the spirit high, and Bayfield
High School the best that it
could be in the memories
and the dreams of everybody
in the school. All of the
students went on to
wonderful colleges and lived
happily ever after.

Student Council started off the year
attending a student council retreat
held at a guest ranch in Mancos.
There, they successfully put on
concessions for the district volleyball
tournament.
One of the main
accomplishments was getting the rule
concerning shorts changed. It began
with shorts only being permitted in
September and May, but the rule was
changed; we are now permitted to
wear shorts year round. There was
also a retreat held at the high school
for the class and student council
officers. Here, everyone discussed
their jobs and got to know everyone
else. Ice breaking activities helped
everyone get comfortable, and then
each person became familiar with his
responsibilities towards the student
council and the individual classes.
The student council did get a lot
accomplished. They made an effort to
work with the student body, and
should be proud of what they
accomplished.

If you are planning to be a tycoon, perhaps the next Ross
Perot, FBLA will prepare you for that worthy cause.
Advisor Denise Haga has taken FBLA a step foreward in
preparing students at BHS to take a place in the business
world. As tradition would have it, BHS did quite well in all
phases of competition with all sizes of schools. This says a lot
about our student body. Dedication, hard work and creativity
all play an important roll in determining who will lead and
who will follow. BHS leads.

1991-92: An Electrifying Year For FHA
Once again, Mrs. Blatnick led
the Future Homemakers of
America through another
successful year. A large group
of enthusiastic students kept
busy throughout the 91-92
school year with fund raisers
and tough competitions and
another fabulous prom
fashion show.
Mrs. Blatnick also had the
STAND program going on
this year. It proved to be quite
successful as well. BHS was
filled with posters and signs
of a friendly alternative to
drugs and alcohol. Good job
guys!

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Academic achievement is
not enough to ensure your
spot in National Honor
Society. You must also be a
good citizen and an all
around good student. This
year Mandi Miller, Lisa
Miller, Cade Bassett, Michal
McNew and Erik Marty joined
this elite group.
Each
student
applied
after
meeting
the
vigerous
academic criteria and went
through a tough screening
process
before
being
accepted, insuring that only
the best are a part of NHS.

KNOWLEDGE BOWL
Facts and figures may seem
trivial to some, but to the
BHS Knowledge Bowl team
they
are
ammunition.
Sponsor Ed Marty once again
led the academic warriors
in the battle against bigger
foes. They emerged from the
skirmish with their heads
held high so they always
made a great showing in
competition.
BHS has
always
been
well
represented by this valiant
group.

This year the band and choir
really " hit it off." The sweet
sound of music both played
and sung by the B.H.S. band
& choir.
The constant
guidance of Mr. Trujillo for
the band really helped them
to sparkle & shine. The
chi or, along with M r .
Gleason, sang themselves to
death trying to find their
golden notes. Between the
band and the chior, the
sound of music filled the

It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!!
Does it get any better than
this? Football players, volleyball
players, and fall cheerleaders didn't
seem to think so. The volleyball
girls with their new head coach
made It real this year.
The
Wolverines had an excellent
football tum this year and are
expecting many more to come.
And, last but not least, the fall
cheerleaders kept spirits high and
made their presence known.
AJI three fall sports excelled
in their field and made many a
team aware of where they stood and
that they had no intent of taking
even a single step in the opposite
direction. "It is always fun starting
the year off with lots of spirit. It is a
natural high listening to the home
crowd cheer the teams on," Natalie
Petersen reports as she looks back
on an excellent junior year and a
very successful season.
All fall sports played hard
and won big. The athletes and the
crowds a.re ready and awaiting the
winter and spring sports. They all
seem to be on the edge of their
seats. Maybe it does get better
than this...

'91 VOLLEYBALL ......... .
The Lady Wolverine spikers
did not crash and burn as
almost everyone thought they
would. This year, it seemed as
though the team had a lot more
to prove than ever before. With
two new coaches came also a
new beginning. The ladies
pulled themselves together and
played with more teamwork
and dedication than ever
before. Each players hardcore
determination brought them to
Regional competition where
the trip to state that would
make a storybook finish was
torn away by the Meeker and
Rangely teams.

Seniors Lorie Larkin, Amanda
Miller, and Janice Wright
were
proud
of

Winter Carnival 1992
Winter Carnival always seems
to cheer people up when the
winter blaaas are starting to get
everyone down. This year,
days like biker day, alien day,
and nerd day gave us
something to laugh about and
made the halls of BHS a little
more exciting. As usual the
Winter Carnival games were
held in the gym and this year
we had a few new games,
including pass the lifesaver on
a toothpick, pop the balloon
between your backs, and a
tomato toss. In the end, the
mighty junior class was
victorious. Winter Carnival
was a much needed and
appreciated break.

our boys show

The boys' baslcelballleam of 1991 92
drew more than just a gym full of fans that
followed them around the stale. lney were
visited by radio broadcasters and journalists
regularly, and the attention never slowed
them down. But what was an the ruclcus
about? It couldn't have been the sharp passes
or game saving three's or-even the dunlc fests
that brought the crowd to its feeL..could it?
What else is there?
With a winning record lilce theirs, this
learn had it going, and they weren't going to
stop. They cliclced, they were determined,
and they saw nothing but a stale
championship ahead Their season was quite
the definition of success with three seniors, a
junior, and a sophomore heading up the
starting seconds.
After a league championship and then
blasting through districts, their goal seemed
within grasp. The boys then traveled to
Grand Junction and there met Northpark, the
learn which, lilce no one else, found what it
look to beat our boys. It was a disappointing
loss. The cheers and shouts had to end short
of the dream.

legendary '91 squad. After a slow start, the
grapplers got busy in the end and finished
Regional runner-up and sent six wrestlers to
state. Heart break kept one of the best
wrestlers home from state. Erik Marty
completed an impressive 14-straight 1st
period pin streak before being put out for the
season by illness. With Marty out, Theo
Kongsoe took his place at heavyweight. The
Danish exchange student had never wrestled
before in his life, but he qualified for state.
Jeremiah Coey came a short second short
from the state finals as he had the state
champ in a headlock when the time ran out.
He went on to finish fifth and will return.

TEAM MEMBERS SHOW DEDICATION
The 1992 track teams had a successful
season, although they did not win as
many track meets as last year.
However the boys won the League meet
for the fourth year in a row, and the
Lady Wolverines won the meet for the
fifth consecutive year. At the regional
track meet, the girls placed 3rd and set
a new school record in the 3200 meter
relay.
On the boys side, the
Wolverines took 2nd behind West
Grand, and received the Regional
Runner-up plaque. The next weekend,
the boys team had a dissapointing
meet. The 800 meter relay team was
disqualified, no one placed in the long
jump, triple jump, and no one placed in
the mile or two mile; however, Dion
Phelps placed 4th in the high jump and
Justin Talbot placed 5th in the 300
meter hurdles and set a new school
record smashing Sam Hendrix's old one.
On the girls side, both the 4-400 relay
and the 4-800 relay placed 6th, along
with Lorie Larkin's personal best for
the season in the 400 meter which
earned her a 5th place medal.

Shawn Smith
92

In a very short time Shawn Smith has made a very big impression on
BHS. Coming from Arizona his junior year, Shawn was a great
addition to the student body. A member of the football and wrestling
teams, he was also a part of the National Honor Society and many
other activities. Friendly and outgoing, Shawn maintains his high
standards while exerting a positive influence upon others. Good Luck
Shawn, thanks for coming into our lives.

Valedictorian

Andrea Salazar
Andrea is an extremely exceptional individual. She was awarded appointments
to West Point as well as the Air Force Academy. $600,000 in scholarships speaks
well of Andrea as others seemed to be impressed with her accomplishments also.
While maintaining a 4.0 Grade Point Average, Andrea has still found many
ways to lead and participate in all phases of student life at Bayfield High School.

Salutatorian

Nicole Browne
Nicole Browne earned the distinction of Salutatorian through hard work and
determination. A 3.9 Grade Point Average indicates many qualities necessary for
success. Nicole plans to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder.

IN CLOSING ....
A big thanks and a warm heart to the community of Bayfield. If this
year's book should be dedicated to anyone, it should be you. Your support
and generosity to me and my family in a time of need made possible a
dream for us. After our tragic fire, your response made us a part of
Bayfield forever. Thank you for helping us through a tough time.
