WHAT A DAY!
Wow! Are we outrageous or what? The spirit of the
wolverines is excellent and the best in the land. The spirit really
came out when the week of homecoming appeared . The week
included diverse dress up days. The days consisted of hero
day, inside-out and backwards day, the day of the living dead,
dress up day, and color day. Students were shining with the
colors of purple and gold to show that we are the best at the
olympic games.
Along with homecoming comes the sports. The Lady
Wolverines played hard for an excellent win over Pagosa. The
ladies took them in two games consisting of 15-11 , and 15-5.
the football team had a disappointing loss to the Center
Vikings. The crowd was at its best, but it was not enough to
keep them going. The guys played a great game and had much
fun. The final score was 3-14. Our spirit during homecoming
explained itself. It helped to unite school spirit again.

A Day of Remembrance
Tension arose throughout the Wolvennes. Nervously, Usa
Kilbank, Milcall llawk, and Jenny Jenk ins waitod, for none of
them knew who was going to be the 1989 Homecom.'dg
Queen. The t11ree homecoming king candidates; Jason
Keirns, Jonat11an Cordova, Jake Forsyt11e, and t11eir teammates
were thinking about nothing, but winning the game. Wilen
half-lime came the homecoming queen candidates and their
escorts were in the spotlight. Over the PA system was
announced: "Milcah Hawk, 1989 Homecoming Queen; and
Jonathan Cordov,1, 19[)9 1/omocollllng KIn g ." After tho
moment, Milcah Hawk replied, "The day was an experience that
I will never forgetr

most exce ent a venture, a er thirteen years of waiting, is
o be a fact of reality for this obnoxious bunch of seniors. The crazy
ombination of jocks, do-gooders, partiers, cowpokes, and many
ther cliques are leaving behind the teachers they have haunted,
rtured, and pleased for years. They are moving on to find their own
ittle niche in a great, big world of excitement and danger. As Lisa
ilbank describes hers and many classmates' feelings, "School has
en great, but I can't wait to stay out real late!"
For some the future will bring the success of dollar signs, and
or others only baldness. Many will follow Lori Putnam's advice: "Live
ike the wind for as long as you can, always." Trouble, it brought
hastising as young ones, detention and groundation in their teenage
ears, and it is not over yet. As Jason Keirns most truthfully states, "I
aven't caused enough trouble yet. Wait till I hit L.A.!" They all have
reams to follow and high expectations for the future, unusual maybe,
ut fitting to each individual. Milcah Hawk sees her future specifically
s... "I see vivid colors and feel real waves."
This accident has been developing for many years. Some will
ontinue to appologize for accidents in their past as in Jonatha
ordova's case. "My appologies to Pete Townsend for hitting him i
he face with my guitar at the WHO concert." Whatever the case, they
ill all move on.
Well, "BE EXCELLENT TO EACH OTHER, AND PARTY ON
I"

Rulers of Tommorrom
Accomplishment, the main purpose of the Class
of "91 ", takes much hard work and devotion.
They believe staunchly in themselves, and use
their broad talents in a variety of ways. From
8:00 a.m. till after practice or work, they
concentrate on doing their best. Sports, clubs,
academics, and various school activities are all
important in the lives of the juniors. "I believe
that school would not be the same without the fun
and excitement of sports," stated Kerri Miller.
During the year, juniors held all offices in
FBLA and all football captain positions. Testing
scores show proof of their academic effort and
promise for the future. Involvement has built up
this group's leadership skills. As Tim Cullen
quoted, "This year has been great for me, because
I got involved in sports. I found my abilities and
applied them."
Through hard work, desire, and participation
the juniors have created their own place in the
world of tomorrow, because they know where
they are going and what they will be doing. Look
for these excellent students in the future , as they
could be the heroes, heroines, and rulers of our
society! "I feel the junior class is tops. I am
proud to be among such great people," Kelly Mars
said.

Rebellious? Yes!

Do you know where your child is right
now? The sophomore parents would usually
respond , "I think so," or "If they're where they
said they would be ," or "No , not really, they
just kind of disappeared."
Sophomores--What a bunch! A large
diversity of thrills prevails from these night
owls. There are the "stay out late" group, the "I
don't care" party group, the "I might get in
trouble if I do that" group, and the "I have too
much homework" study group. Right or wrong ,
voicing their own opinions is a must. As
Jasmine Silvernail emphatically states , "The
class of '92 is the most rebellious class to hit
the high school." As compared to the other
classes , Ryan Farmer replied, "We have more
style than any other class around!" Going
against the grain and striving for individuality
make their impression. Someday , they are
going to turn the world up-side down !
"This year began with a boom , says
Maurice Allen, "we participated in most
activities and won the bonfire contest." Good
points and bad--Unique they are !

Freshmen Out To Lunch .. .

David Geier does his best Stevie Wonder while Jason
Ragsdale, T?d Wilmer, and Clark Peterson sing back-up.

They don't have cars yet, they don't
want to eat in the school caferteria, and
they need the socialization practice.
This is the story of lunch time for
freshmen. After slipping their parents
signature onto a permission slip to leave
campus during the wee hours of the
morning, they begin "begging" for rides
to lunch. Some try to set up friendly
ties with licensed drivers, others just
get lucky. As David Zenger complains, "I
hate not being able to drive." This is a
common complaint for freshmen. Others
have faith in their older brother or
sister to hitch a ride. Kelly Frye can
often be found saying, "Tracy. will you
please give me a ride to the store?"
Others are not so lucky. They escape the
experience of the rush to the store by
either having too wise of parents or
falling short on cash.
Whether it be "begging" for rides or
surviving school lunches,
everyone
finds his or her own spot on the
totempole and makes the best of the
short 30 minute lunch break.

Administration and Faculty Striving Together!
Faculty on the R.un
Friends, enemies, instructors,
mentors, teachers, torturers, and
entertainers--these can all be terms
applied to the outstanding staff at Bayfield
High School. They try to do everything for
the students and still remain somewhat
sane. In their struggle to instruct the
students, help sen1ors with college
materials, and keep the building standing
up-right, they do an excellent job. The
staff is one that will help the students of
1989-90 rock the decade.
There were some changes in the house
leading to an adjustment for all. Mr.
Prior moved to the position of Athletic
Director, from head football and
basketball coach. Replacing Mr. Prior, as
head coach, was Mr. Keirns, doing a great
job. Going to the library can be a good
experience, w1th the assistance of the new
B.H.S. librarian, Mrs. Ginger Conner. At
semester we gained Ms. Gummerus and
Mr. Johnson, to the loss of Mr. Luter and
Mr. Jackson.
The Bayfield school,
students, and staff wish the best to those
who come and stay, and those who go.

Students at BHS have always
tried to work together. It is just
the way of the world; the more
people working on something, the
quicker and better it gets done.
This was often referred to as
"cheating." Over the years many
people have found themselves in
severe trouble for this practice.
After an inservice on January
16, 1990, some students saw a
change. The idea of cooperative
education had been transferred to
the teachers. Although many see
it only as a permit to "cheat," it
is made to increase social skills.
This learning theory is still
being implemented at BHS, but,
at least, "cheating" is no longer
always considered a death threat!

ATHLETICC
The agony, the defeat is just one thing athletes or B.H.S.
experience through fall, winter, and spring sports. Sports,
as a whole for the wolverines, were somewhat or a success.
Neither the football team, nor the volleyball team went to
slate, but both went as far as records go.
When winter sports roll around, basketballs go bouncing
and two opposite sports join into one. Basketball season
brings the spirit out in the crowd and much unity is conceived
within the school.
The other winter sport is wrestling .
Wrestling is one or the toughest sports or all. It takes much
motivation for the individual. Kyle Beebe, B.H .S. wrestler,
replies, "Dedication has pulled the rew that want the victory
out in front for good inspiration."
The cheerleaders started orr slow, but in the end a stong
and dedicated five pulled orr an excellent second place finish
at state competition . Spirit rose to a peak during basketball
season with their help.
When the daisies begin to bloom , the tracksters or B.H.S.
dig out their track shoes and start the running and jumping .
Hardwork and dedication is required in this inlense, individual
sport to be the best.

SPIKERS HANG TOUGH

Beginning most games to the beat of "Hanging Tough," proved
helpful to the 1989 volleyball team. The regular season record of 13
and 2 helped raise the spirit of the Lady Wolverines.
The preseason consisted of the Ignacio Invitational Volleyball
Tournament. The varsity completed the tournament by taking home
the third place trophy. This level of intensity remained consistent
throughout the season.
By winning the San Juan Basin A League Championship Title, the
Lady Wolverines were given a "bye" in the first round of the Class A
District Tournament. The Wolverines began the tournament slowly by
losing to the the Cedaredge Bruins. They came back strong to defeat
the Paonia Eagles. Down 1-11 the Wolverines put their hearts into it
and staged a fantastic comeback victory. This put them into the
championship game against the very same team that handed them their
first defeat, Cedaredge. The Wolverines won the first game, 15-9,
but could not keep the momentum and lost the last two games and the
match. This was the end for the Lady Wolverines and their season.
Senior, Lisa Kilbank, summed up the season by saying, "The year was
fun, and I hope the underclassmen have great success!"

Cheerleading ... Rn Rdven ture In Itself I
~

Spirit Sets The Tone! ~

S-P-1-R-1-T. .. This word many have
heard as a chant, but the 1989-90
cheerleaders tried to seek and display
a deeper meaning of it. Knowing that
the tone of the school is set by the
"spiritleaders," they tried many
creative ideas to increase the
Wolverine Spirit. These included
skits, initiation of the spirit stick and
plunger, spirit wars, class chants, and
impromtu songs and dances. Weekly
locker signs made the halls scream out
for spirit with purple and gold. The
student's spirit finally came to a peak
during a Dolores basketball game
when the roof came crashing down!
Adaptability became a necessary
skill for each cheerleader.
Mrs.
Conner became the new sponsor at
the end of the summer after the girls'
camp in Albuquerque. "I have shed
many tears with the girls this year and
have a few extra grey hairs, too. I just
hope we have all formed some special
friendships," said Mrs. Conner. The
original squad consisted of nine
cheerleaders- seniors, Teal Peck, Lori
Putnam, Michelle Suffling, and Janie
Hawkins; junior, Wendy Dewey; and
the freshmen, Kelly Frye, Megan
Springe, Melanie Broun, and Jennifer
Cleveland.
The Colorado State Spirit Contest
was held in Denver at McNichols
Arena. Teal Peck, Lori Putnam, Kelly
Frye, Megan Springe, and Melanie
Broun made up the squad that took an
excellent 2nd place trophy there.
Hard practice, and strong hearts led up
to their outstanding finish and their
meeting of movie star, Sean Astin.
Troughout the year activities such
as camp, fund raisers, a Christmas
party, traveling, secret sisters, Wendy
going to the Hula Bowl, and state
competition united the young group
and formed them into a great bunch of
cheerleaders. As Kelly Frye said, "I
feel a lot closer to everyone, especially
the ones I went to state with."

Flakes turned to flower as
Winter Carnival became Spring

sparked for the dance and games.
Class lip syncs made the game
day a huge success. Winning
first place were the juniors
singing "Happy Trails." The
freshmen took second singing a
song displaying their closeness,
"Lean on Me." With romance in
the air the sophomores
performing "Lost That Loving

"Do It All the Time," tied for third
place. The fun of games turned to
a night of dancing, with great disk

BHS Girls Claim League Title ...
"3 ... 5 ...7 ... 9 ... 1ook at that babe on the line!" the crowd
roared as Lisa Kilbank stepped up to the free-throw line to
attempt her final shot for a victory over the Dove Creek
Bulldogs. Lisa Lilbank quotes, "This was an exciting, fun
game. The crowd was really supportive and really rowdy,
which helped the team win the league title."
The 1989-90 Girls Basketball Season was one of the
best. The Lady Wolverines started off with excellent
attitudes, and much enthusiasm . The spirit throughout
the entire season was high, but not high enough for a
state title. Everyone thought the girls would go to state
and do reasonably well in the overall standings, but they
were upset by Nucla at the district tournament in
over-time.
Great leadership skills and hardwork were displayed by
many team members. Senior, Brittney Lee, says, "The
basketball season was very exciting and being San Juan
League Champs added to the enjoyment. I have enjoyed
playing basketball and being part of this team. A lot of
hard work and time is put into athletics, but believe me, it
is worth every minute!"
The best of coaches were the backbone to this year's
team. Coach Vernon Kimball sums up the year with,
"Outstanding Season! The girls really accomplished a lot.
We ended the season with a good record . We were
League Champions, and three girls were named
all-conference. Also, the officials chose the BHS girls for
the Outstanding Sprotsmanship Award." Good attitudes,
great coaching, hard work, dedication, and leadership
made this year all it was ...OUTSTANDING!!!

Woluerines Striue For R

II

So close, but yet so far away.
The BHS boys basketball team tried
their hardest and played their best
game of the year against Mancos in
the District Championship game at
Durango High School. Even though
the Wolverines did not clench this
tile, the year was very successful
and made more people realize that
the BHS boys were more than
people projected them to be.
The boys got off to a slow start,
but as the season progressed the
BHS
boys
became
strong
competitors in the Basin A League
with a record of 11-10. The team
had their most fun and successful
game against Silverton. They broke
1 00 points to Silverton's mere 40.
With 13 seconds left, Nick
Cornelison shot a three pointer to
arouse the crowd over a subtancial
victory.
Nick Cornelison stated,
"We were nothing compared to what
we will be next year!"
All around, the boys season was
exciting and fun. We hope that next
year, and all the years to come, will
bring an exciting time to remember
and cherish as this year was.

The gladiators eye their opponents warily.
Facing each other armed only with skill,
knowledge and brawn, they prepare for battle.
The signal is given, and the contesy commences.
Each combatant strives for victory and glory. In
the end the victors hand is raised, and the
vanquished foe lives to fight another day.
More often than not the hand being raised
belonged to a BHS wrestler. This year the
Wolverine Wrestling Federation (WWF), as they
are sometimes called, set many team and
individual records on their way to a successful
season. They set team records with 109 pins,
257 takedowns, and 139 wins against 88 losses.
They were undefeated in dual matches and
finished high in all tournaments. They began the
year with promise by winning their own Bayfield
Invitational Wrestling Tournament and followed
up with several team trophies. The WWF wrestled
with the best. They beat Dolores, the 2nd place
team in the state, in a dual, finished with other top
ranked teams, and for a while found themselves
in the top 10.
Injuries, ineligibility, and the loss of several
varsity wrestlers hurt the team before Christmas
break, but those remaining on the team displayed
a lot of quality wrestling. Although numbers were
down, statistics continued to climb. Things still
looked promising clear up until districts. The
possibilities of sending 5, and maybe even 7, to
state seemed likely for the Wolverines as they
headed into Dolores for the district
championships. A lapse in concentration can be
fatal in a sport like wrestling, and the WWF fell flat
in the semifinals. This round saw state hopes
fade as they lost 5 out of 7 matches. With team
pride at stake, Coach Edwards took them into the
locker room and told them, "Just when we needed
our best round ever, we wrestled our worst...it's
not over. Go out there and wrestle for pride.- Go
out winners.
Don't win for me, win for
yourselves."
Whatever was said seemed to work. Of the 16
matches left to wrestle, the Wolverines won 13 of
them, 11 by pin. Wrestling with a vengence, they
finished with 2 fourths, 5 thirds, 1 second, and 1
district champion-Kyle Beebe.
They
reestablished the WWF as a team to reckon with.
Although only 2 qualified for state, Dan Chamblee
at hwt and Kyle Beebe at 130 (6th at state), the
team is young and will be back strong next year.

Hard Work and Dedication Is Track
The baton was exchanged from the hand of Lori Larkin into the hand of Kelly Mars as she sprinted the
anchor leg of the 1600 meter relay into a second place finish at the state track meet. The girls track team
rolled over teams one by one throughout the season. They were District champions and took seven girls to
state ending up with an eighth place finish. For the first time in the history of Bayfield track both the girls
and boys track teams were league champions. The boys track team surprised alot of people this year. They
started off slow, but by the end of the season were a very competitive team. They were third at Districts
and were disappointed at the state meet with only one boy out of five making it to finals. Both teams showed
lots of hard work and lots of effort which led to many accomplishments. Many school records were broken
and the hard work and dedication paid off. Next years' teams look to be even better.

Do It Right!
Versatility ... this is one word
that can be used to describe the
students at B.H.S. Although it
seems athletics gets most of the
press, the Wolverines succeed in
many areas. Our FHA and FBLA
chapters are among the best in
the state. They have proven this
time
and
time
again
in
competition.
Band and choir
concerts and drama presentations
have
provided
much
entertainment.
Students find a way to get
involved in many activities.
Through clubs
and other
academics, they gain skills and
knowledge so very valuable in
their future plans. In fact, many
students have gone on to succeed
in their chosen fields. No one
ever sets out to accomplish
nothing. We set our goals, make
plans, and then embark upon a
course of realization. Many goals
are pie-In-the-sky.
Many set
their sights too lo'w.
But
whatever the goal, we need all
the help we can get.
The
cooperation and teamwork we
find at B.H.S. gives us all a big
heads tart.

Although small, the B.H.S.

FBLA Ends An Era
Businoss ... mind your own
bus1ness!
That is exactly what
B.H.S. students are doing in Future
Bus1ness Leaders of America
(FBLA).
Learnmg essential sk1lls
while competing and having fun
seems to be what FBLA is all about.
This year's group was lead by Eric
Reid as president, and was under
the outstanding direction of Mrs.
Maxine McEwen. Built on tradition
and past experience, again they
were one of the top chapters in the
state.
Many hours of hard work,
practice, and effort paid off as 12
members qualified for state
competition in various areas of
business skills, techniques, and
application.
Monte Pope placed
first in Business Law and Katrina
Mornson placed first in Advanced
Shorthand. Both of these students
will represent Colorado at the
National FBLA Finals to be held at
the New Convention Center in
Washington D.C.
Many other

members placed high at state also.
All of this is tribute to Mrs.
McEwen who has led this chapter to
excel!.
For a small school, B.H.S. has
had great success over the years
competing and winning over much
larger
schools.
Bayfiel d 's
reputation has been enhanced
because of this success. 1990-91,
however, will bring some new
faces as Mrs. McEwen is retiring.
Success will continue as the desire
and dedication instilled in the
students remains as her legacy.
Always pushing the students to
strive a little harder, to stretch
their abilities, to expect excellence
Mrs. McEwen has made her mark.
B.H.S. and FBLA will never be the
same as the dynasty ends. New
faces will bring their own fresh
style to B.H.S. Life goes on,
changes are made, the past is over,
but we are all better people because
of 11. Good luck to Mrs. McEwen,
job well done.

The Truth About Cinderella
With weeks of practice, the
cast in the play, "The Truth
About Cinderella," was not
totally perfected.
The first
performance went well even with
one member missing, but the
second night was a great success.
With Cinderella making a big
change in the middle, everyone
was expecting a beautiful girl in
a long, full pink dress all ready
for the ball, but they got a wild
blonde wearing a skimpy black
dress strutting across the stage.
Finally, she lost her glass
slipper and all the men anxiously
helped find the foot.
At the
wedding, Cinderella (Michelle
Suffling) and the Prince (Jesse
Kuntz) tied the knot.
Ending
unfortunately, with Cinderella
scrubbing the floor for the Queen
before her own reception ... And
that's the truth about Cinderella!

Music To Your Ears
On May 17, the B.H.S. Band and

concert. Early in the even1ng the
program was reduced to g1ggles as
Gretchen Morr 1s and Andrea

However, composure was

proceeded without a hitch. In fact

beautifu lly .
At

Do You Believe Everything You Read ?
This is not just another
yearbook. This is an adventure
of epic proportions. From day
one it was obvious there was
going to be nothing ordinary
about this year. From the theme
of this yearbook (a cheep rip-off
from some paltry movie) to the
last minute rush to finish the
book, it was a most excellent
adventure. The staff was on a
mission.
One with history
making
possibilities.
If
successful the course of history
and the face of mankind would be
undeniably altered.
Okay, so maybe I am
exaggerating a little. We just
wanted to put together the best
yearbook ever, and we may have
been successful.
Under the
direction of Mr. Edwards, the
1989-90 yearbook promises to
please even the harshest critic.
You will find inside its cover, 16
pages of color, artful layouts,

meaningful copy, and outstanding
photographs. A yearbook says
something about the school, the
year, and its people. It speaks to
generations. We hope this one is
no different.
If we speak highly of this
book, it is because we honestly
feel that way. We have put lots
of hard work and part of our soul
into it. Lots of laughs, copious
quantities of perspiration, and
even a few tears stain the pages
and leave a watermark of our
touch . We hope th is book speaks
to all of you, and brings to recall
the good times and bad times of
1989-90. It marks the passage
of another group through the
faculty of B.H.S.
As we say
goodbye to all those who have
touched and changed our lives, we
leave you with the following:
" Be exc elle nt to each other,
and party on dudes !"

Diversity defined the 1989-90
staff of the Through the Times
nowspapor of Bayfield H'gh School.
Thoy were all from different
"cliques," but they pulled together
for one common goal: the overall
product. They learned a lot about
meeting deadlines, writing unbiased
stories, and newspaper nghts and
respons bilities.
Mistakes and all,
it was a learn ng experience.
The newspaper tried to print a
variety of stones and to include
more students.
Stories ranged
from entertainment type stories
such as Ross's Ramblings and Heard
In the Halls to informative stories
such as the health education story
and the data Is of next year's new
schedule.
The 1dea of the newspaper is to
appeal to the students, while at the
same time, inform the community
of the happenings at the high school.

unt.

A different type of competition
is found in Knowledge Bowl.
Armed only with quick wit and a
little smarts, these folks battle
for the glory of B.H.S. A mix of
seasoned verterns and green
freshmen formed this year's
team, and they performed
admirably well is battle.
With sponsor, Mr. Marty,
they spent long hours practicing
and refreshing their skills. All
of this work paid off when they
finished 31st out of 60 in
competition with schools form
all over the state. Keep watching
and someday you might be able to
catch one of these warriors on
Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune
going for the really big one.

Student Council of 1989-90
Every serious student council
officer has an image of ther ultimate
team. It is much more than the
means of making decisions for the
student body, but a feeling of
importance and power. There is
exhilerating sense of running
things, untamed by the rules of the
school.
The Student Council this year
consisted of Jason Keirns,
President; Jesse Kuntz , Vice
President; Michelle Suffling,
Secretary; and Andy Brown,
Treasurer.
Together they
conquered
the
task
of
Homecoming.
They all also
attended a Student Council Retreat
with many other schools to learn
about leadership and drug and
alcohol abuse from their guest
speaker Rick Miller, a former drug
user.Morning announcements were
always an eye-opener with the
group, too.
Mrs. Mericle, the new leader,
summed up the Student Council by
saying, "What a group! Don't quote
me on that!"
