MESSAGE

FROM

THE

SUPERINTENDENT

The school year of 1949-50 has broadened the vision of the community
with the enlarged responsibilities and privileges afforded by a larger and
better school district.
The late arrival of the "New School Buses," the death of one member
of the Junior Class, and the necessary closing of school due to Polio have
added some extra meaning to this year of schooling.
This Annual will serve to refresh our memories of the many
pleasures and associations as well as some difficulties endured by the
student body and teachers alike.
This Annual has been the result of the plans of the annual staff.
The ideas, expressions, and pictures serve as indicators of the thinking
of this group. As this goes to press, appreciation is expressed for the
patience, cooperativeness, and willingness of the select group who have
so ably combined the pages of this year's annual.
May this book be reviewed with ever-increasing pleasure as the
years come and go. May those whose pictures are found herein continue
to mount the stairs that lead to success, without undue difficulty.

THE

YEAR

IN

REVIEW

School began September 12th with Mr. Harold McColum as superintendent. He also teaches
Speech and presides over the Order of the Wooden Horse. Mr. Hilton, our coach, teaches commercial subjects and sponsors the Senior class. Languages are taught by Mrs. Peterson, who
sponsors the pep club. From Durango came our Math, Chemistry, and History teacher, Mr. Evans.
He keeps his eye on the Sophomores. Mrs. Jenkins teaches every afternoon, and sponsors the
Freshmen. Last but not least, Mr. McTaggart. He teaches music to all grades' and sponsors
the Juniors. He came to us from Texas where he taught last year.
Grade school teachers, from the first through the eighth are: Mrs. Holgate, Mrs. Crowell,
Mrs. Falicon, Mrs. Kelly, Miss Largent, Mrs. Beuten, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Morris. Miss Lucas
resigned as third-grade teacher and the grade was taken over by Mrs. Falicon, who came from
Colorado Springs.
The first social affair of the school was Freshman Initiation. After that they were officially
recognized as High School students.
The annual Carnival was a hit. We net about $200. There was everything in the way of
entertainment, even a movie with the school's new motion picture projector. Our classes have
been broadened by pictures which go right along with them.
Next came our pre-season Basketball Tourney. There were only four teams entered: Pagosa,
Utes, Ignacio, and Bayfield. The Champs were the Pagosa Buccaneers, a prophecy for the year.
Although we had our school buses all year, we went to Silverton for our first basketball
trip. Incidentally, Silverton beat us, but the trip was worth it, after all. The bus drivers are Phil
Sapp, Ivan Parks, and Jimmie Frahm.
We gave a Christmas Music Festival on Dec. 21. There was chorus music from all grades
and a Christmas carol sung by every grade. Everyone in High School Music classes seems very
enthusiastic about it,
School took up on January 3rd after Christmas vacation. The highlight of that occasion
was Mr. McColum's mustache. Immediately after that every boy in High School appeared with a
mustache. Guess they didn't fertilize them enough, because theirs soon disappeared.
The date set for the Junior play was Friday, Jatruary 13th. The play was postponed in remembrance of Wayne Smith, who died January 12th. Since he had a leading part in the play, it made
finding another actor to fit his (art necessary. The play, "The Phantom Bells," was given January
18th with a record attendance crowd.
Our school was closed for two weeks because of polio. This really was necessary because
Mr. Hilton and Mr. McColum were under quarantine and there was such a polio scare at the time.
Mary Ann Murray took polio, and no one knew how many of her classmates she had exposed to the
polio bug.
Directly following vacation, the student council went to work on putting out our annual. It
is hoped that school and the annual will be out about the same time.
At the Durango Basketball Tournament, Bayfield made a good showing but was eliminated
after their first two games. They played Silverton and Mancos, both of which were good games.
Silverton took the Championship after fighting for her life with Pagosa.
Here at home we had our own Inner-class Tourney. In the boys' teams the Seniors proved
winners over the Freshmen, the Sophomores taking the Juniors. The girls entered the Tournament
with the Rag Mop (Juniors) versus the Wild Geese (Freshmen). The Junior girls took the Championship and the Senior boys defeated the Sophomores after a close battle for the Championship
title.
We have yet to look forward to a Spring Music Festival which is scheduled for April 7th.
About a week later is the Fine Arts Festival in Durango. Many of the music students have practiced
solos and duets and the boys and girls choruses have their numbers almost ready.
The Seniors have begun practice on their play, "The Elusive Bachelor," which they will
give in April. The play cast includes every Senior.
Also, away off in the dim future is the Junior-Senior Prom. The Juniors plan to stage a
nice banquet with the money earned from the play.
And then comes the day we are all looking forward to, Graduation Day. The Seniors will
graduate (they hope), school will be out, and another three months of vacation will begin.

CLASS PROPHECY
As we look into the future ten years from now, we see the following:
Donald Mcintyre is married now, but guess what: Martha let Kay Larsen beat her time. Kay is
making a good farmer's wife.
Cora Landreth has gone to Alaska. You know that in Alaska a girl can get married within two
weeks. We wonder if that could be the reason for her going.
John Purcell is now at the head of a large Chemistry laboratory, but don't get us wrong; he is
standing at the entrance.

Jane Thieme has bought part interest in a "Trading Post" in Gallup, New Mexico. We didn't
know the guy that drives a blue convertible and has blond hair was an Indian.
Helen McCarthy is a housewife with three brats, her husband still driving the 7-Up truck . •
Lois Butler is now owner of a dude ranch at La Boca. She married a rich man 1!!
Harold LePlatt is still a single man and also a school teacher at Bayfield High. The girls are
still after him ! ! !
Sarah Davis is still working at the cafe and flirting with the truck drivers. We don't know why
she doesn't marry one of them and get it over with.
Faye Haga now has six boys who are all going to be 6'4" tall and good basketball players.
Dean Halverson has put up a little shop. He is developing photos and designing airplanes; but
don't get excited, it is just toy ones.
CLASS WILL
The Senior Clas s of 1950 wills the following:
Jane Thieme wills her temper to Roberta Pierson; we hope she never uses it.
Cora Landreth wills her figure to Kenneth McCoy. What a combination I
Sarah Davis wills her lavender lipstick to Edwin Scofield. It is the only way he will get any on
his face.
Faye Haga wills her ability to get along with Jeanie Wells to Merle Harrison.
Lois Butler wills her Model A to Larry Smith. We wonder if he could make good use of it.
John Purcell wills his curly hair to Wilma Wells. We hope she uses it.

Helen McCarthy wills her good disposition to Victor Neuenschwander. Why don't you use her
smile, Victor?
Donald Mcintyre wills Martha Shelhamer to Dwight Ward.
Harold LePlatt wills his ability to get along with the teachers to Raymond Wells.
Dean Halverson wills his ability to get along with Mr. McColum to Martin Landreth. Martin,
why don't you take advice 1 II

MUSIC
This year's music class started with a very experienced teacher, Mr. Dan L. McTaggart.
He didn't know it, but he was really getting into a job, as we didn't know much about music.
This year we have a mixed group of boys and girls, although this picture doesn't indicate
it. The boys had gone to Durango for basketball practice, so they didn't have their pictures taken

with the girls.
The boys joined very unwillingly, but I believe they enjoy it now.
The whole music class sponsored a Christmas program this year, and everyone really
enjoyed it.
We are now getting ready for a Spring Festival and the Fine Arts Festival in Durango.
We hope we will show some more improvement by then and make a fine showing for Bayfield.

The ''B" Club is composed of all high school athletes who have
earned letters in any competitive high school sport. This is the
second year for such an organization at Bayfield High; however,
it can look forward to an active future with only four of the thirteen
members graduating.
The pre-season basketball tournament was the club's main project
for this year. Training rules for th~ San Juan Basin Tournament
were also suggested and adopted by the members. These and other
activities of the club have helped the success of athletics at
Bayfield High.
