Super intendent' Mc sage
Do you r emember the ong that advised in haunting! y sentimental lines,
"Whatever will be, will be?" You may have made the mental note, "Bc aut1ful,
but i it tr ue?" and then you anwc r c d your own quetion with, "If it is true, it's
both oothing syrup and r etching poi on".
How r ight you ar c . But how popular tht "what's-the-usc-ism" turns out to
be! The oldier hows it when, between dying gasps, he says, "That shell had
my name on it. " The r acing driver ha the arne idea when he predicts, "I'll be
around until my number comes up. " And it's the same with the sick man, r c
covenng from a one-in-ten chance, when h e smiles through hi pam, "I guc s
my tune isn't just yet. "
It is a ter rible thing, but we human get comfort from imagining that we ar c
tr apped by the circumtancc s of life, forced to make chotees that we never want
to make, shunted off mto 1tuation that compr omise or embarr as us, tricked
and cheated by the world and its contents maneuvered into an unequal struggle
with tragic mifortunc .
But are we right? Do we not contr ol our own destiny? We must take the r e
sponsibility of what we do, or do not do. Should our acts deter mme what we ar e.
"Whatever will be, will be" is not the theme song for this school JUSt as it is
not for the individual mer.. ber s of it. To the first gr ade we say "Welcome. " To
the seniors we say "good-bye" and ak "Did this school really do the ver y best
for you" and "Did you r eally try to take advantage of your oppor tunity?"
Your Super intendent,
Thoma W. Hill

It seems like ever y year passes a little faster than the last one. This 1967I would like to think that we have im
parted at least a small amount of meaningful, useful, knowledge to you students
during this past year. If we have accomplished this, then we can look back on
this as a successful year. To the gr aduating eniors, I hope we have given you
the necessary tools to go on in your chosen ar eas and become successful. We
who remain here at Bayfield High School, would like to thank you for what you
have given us over the past four years.

68 school year has not been an exception.

Tom James
Pr incipal

Memor ies br ought back by an annual ar e tr easured ones of old friends,
games won and lost, your first formal dance, your date with a dream for the
pr om, that test you worked so hard to pass, the time in chemistr y you made
hydr ogen sulfide gas and stunk up the whole building, and hundreds of other
things having a certain fondness in the r ecollection. May it ever be thus and
may this annual be thus to you. In years to come may the memor ies you r ecall
when thumbing through its pages be pleasant ones which bring a lump to your
throat and star s to your eyes.

SENIOR HISTORY
We the cla::;s of 196o -::;tarted our quest for an education under the direction of Mrs. Bromell in the fall of
1956, \\lth 24 eager beavers. Our classroom was the Presbytenan church annex. Of the beginning class six
arc still here to graduate. They are: Marie Cundiff, Beverly Beaver, Steve Ancell, Jerry Abernathy, Joe
Dee Fahnon and Lorna Wommer.
We managed to survive the fir::>t grade and pass on to the second and Mrs. Cockreham. We felt very impor
tant to be moving mto the old yellow schoolhouse like regular studen ts. Those of the class of '68 who joined
us this second year were Bill tagleman, Ros::; Gosney and June Box.
One of the things we remember about the third grade with Mrs. Ostwald is the fact that if we didn't know our
multiplication tables we couldn't go to Music.
Our fourth grade year was spent with Mrs. Caldwell. We had a swingin' end of the year party with Mrs.
Caldwell taking us to her ranch for a mountain climbing outing and picnic after.
Dona Fro::;t and haron Rather jo111ed us in the fifth grade. Mrs. Pinckert wa::; our keeper. We entered into
the world of businc s::; by having a school supplies store 111 our room.
SiXth grade was great. We were so grown up-chang111g classe::;-different teachers. We had an all day end of
the y ar picnic at June Box's.
During the seventh grade we remember the hay ride given by the 8th grade with Mr. Wyant taking us on a
hay ride from Bayfield to the Dam with a weiner roast at the Dam. On Jr. Play Day we presented the play
"Cleane::;t Town In The West".
D1anc Bu::;h came to u::; during our th year. We placed 111 the Homecoming float contest. We presented th
play "Getting Gracie Graduated", with Lorna Wommer as Gracie. We all felt so very grown up and impor
tant at Graduation. Afterwards we had a Piz z a Party and tlance at Lorna Wommers.
Our Freshman year brought us Donna Wade and Freshman initlation. We were over being such big wheels
and being in High 'hool, mayb even a little scared. Ross and Raymond were on the "A" basketball team
and we took con ·olation at Denver.
s ophomores we gained Vickie Parks. We didn't f el as out of place this year. Ross and Raymond wer
the "A" basketball team and we wer real proud of them. They were runners up for state champs.
Our Junior year Dora and Florinda Lucero and Charlie Staley came to us. We were grieved by the loss of
Raymond Lucero and Arleta Phillips. We had a lot of fun preparing and giving the Prom. We had for our
theme "In The Misty Moonlight".
Ross and teve were on the "A" ba ketball team that took us to Denver. They came so clo::;e to winning it
almo::;t made us cry. Also this year four of our boys, Jerry Abernathy, Steve Ancell, Bill Stagleman, and
Ro::;s Gosney played on the football team that won the State Quarterfinals.
Our Senior year we were proud to win a free day from school by selling the most tickets for the Carnival.
The P. E . class of '68 consisting of Seniors: Donna Wade, Dona Frost, Janie Richardson, Judy Mankins,
Marie Cundiff, Pat Campbell, Florinda and Dora Lucero honored Bayfield by defeating Durango and Farm·
ington at Basketball and winning the trophy offered at the San Juan Basin Play Day.
1c w Students arc Tom Dodd, Janie R1chardson, Pat Campbell, Darwyn McBride and Don Hill.
