IN MEMORY

Raymond Lucero, son of Mrs. Carolyn Lucero and the late
Silviano Lucero.
Raymond was killed in a one car accident October 1, 1966.

When the time of year comes for the writing of this message for the annual, and as
I observe the annual staff as they strive to make their deadlines; I suddenly realize
just how fast the ss:hool year is getting away from us. As I look back, I wonder if I was
able to accomplish all I had planned. I'm afraid not. It is difficult to tell whether it was
for lack of time, or for lack of interest or concern; however, I think that lack of
accomplishment is generally due to lack of time. In this' age of jet rate speed it is
hard to concentrate, plan and finalize the plans, for tomorrow they are "old stuff" or
our attention is demanded elsewhere.
I wonder if you students do not find that you too do not have enough time to accomplish all that you had planned to do. If this is true, I hope that you will soon find a
solution for this waste of time. Before you realize, it wil~ be up to you to make provision for yourself. Whether it be in furthuring your education or in some field of
employment, or as a married person supporting a family; you are the one who must
utilize this time to its fullest extent in order to get what you want out of life and to be
happy. I hope you are all able to accomplish this feat.
To the graduating class of 1967 I wish the best of everything, and may God be with
you always.
Sincerely

Kenneth Mobbs , Supt.
Bayfield High School

As the end of another year draws near, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the students and faculty for making this year truly successful. I wish to offer
my special congratulations to those seniors who have achieved beyond minimal expec·
tations, whether it was in athletics, scholarship, or service. These students have
been the pace-setters. As these Seniors graduate and leave Bayfield, it is my sincerE
hope that they may continue to grow in stature and in knowledge. Surely these young
people are the leaders of the future.
To you Seniors, may what you have learned at Bayfield High School always be
useful in your future lives.
I wish you God speed.

Tom James, Principal
Bayfield High School

I can remember very well how when I was in school we looked forward with great
anticipation to getting our annuals each year. Each year, also, we spent hours signing
annuals and getting ours signed. At the time, we did these things because we were
caught by the "annual fever." Now when I look at my annuals, they mean more to me
than they ever did during my days in school. It is nice to be able to open the annual
and reminisce about school days and to see people and scenes which would long be
forgotten if it were not for the annual. It is my sincerest wish that in the future when
you open your annuals they will prove as precious to you as mine do to me. May they
remind you of many happy times spent in school in Bayfield, and bring back memories
that had seemed to elude you until that one magic picture turned back the pages of
time to those happy days in school.

CLASS HISTORY
In August, 1955--we, the class of 1967 started to school, twelve of the original class remain. The
class was divided into two sections, Mrs. Broomell taught one class in the old yellow schoolhouse and
Mrs. Thompson the other, in a house across from the school. The punishment for anything and e verything was to be sent to the baby table. The seniors who started out in the first grade together are: Larry
Davenport, Tommy Davis, Sandra Hasstedt, Howard Hickman, Art Huntington, Judy Loring, Joe Lucero,
Steve McDaniel, Poncho McNew, Linda Reed, Donnie Snooks, and Roseanne Wells.
Having survived all the terrors of first grade, even though we sometimes thought we wouldn't, we
went on to second grade, now living in constant fear of being sent to the boiler room. Mrs. Cockreham
and Mrs. James were the teachers; Connie Carter joined the class and Joe Lucero left it.
The highlight of the third grade year was the production, "Cinderella", starring Linda Reed and
Poncho McNew. Mrs. Ostwald and Mrs. Folsom were the teachers. Luellie Archuleta, Dixie Frost and
Jerry Wells joined the class that year.
Our fourth grade class was taught in the present high school building by Mrs. Folsom (a repeat) and
Mrs. Stagelman. Mary Ellen Lucero came into the class. We are frequently visited by 'fairies" who left
candy or gum on our desks while we kept our eyes closed.
Mrs. Stagelman repeated as teacher and taught the fifth grade class along with Mrs. Pinckert. Noontimes were spent in games of tag- -the girls against the boys. Five more joined our wonderful class.
They were: Wayne Cundiff, Mickey Foley, Sam Lucero, Doug Mann, and Bill Payton. The end of the year
was marked.
Junior High started with sixth grade in those days. Pam Johnston and Randy Jones along with those
already in the class ventured into a world of changing classes and worst of all- -no recess. We were now
in the newly built grade school and junior high building.
Cecil Mars and Monte Wommer joined us in the seventh grade. That year we won the basketball tournament at Pagosa- -we'd known we were winners all the time. We gave a Valentines Party for the eighth
grade complete with Cupid in the form of Kenny Tubbs.
In the eighth grade we were, of course, big wheels. Another one of our great productions was given
that year, "Cheaper by the Dozen. " Graduation was in the afternoon and we had a dinner at the Main
Street Cafe that night, followed by a sockhop.
Our freshmen year we continued being winners- -first place on our float for Homecoming, and Doug
Mann and Linda Heinz reigned as carnival king and queen. However, we didn't feel like winners on
initiation day. There were few pop bottle caps left in town after each person in the class got the designated number to wear as a necklace; and our eggs were in bad shape by the time all the Seniors had
signed them and we had rolled them down the gym floor. John Norton was a new addition to the troop.
Sophomore year we again got first on our float and two of our members- -Poncho McNew and Art
Huntington- -helped the basketball team to be state consolation champions. We lost two members that
year, Mickey Foley and Ra11.dy Jones.
Frank Carman and Valerie Williams joined our junior class, and Joe Lucero and Mickey Foley
returned. We placed third on our float this year and made our contributions to the San Juan Basin "A"
League Football championship team and State Runners-up Basketball team. Cecil Mars was named fullback to the All Conference Football team, and Poncho McNew and Art Huntington were each given a birth
on the All-State Basketball team. Our junior play, "Professor, How Could You?" was a great success.
One of the highlights of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom, with the theme of "Deep Purple". After
hours of working (?) our final goal was achieved and everyone enjoyed a beautiful evening. The biggest feat
we pulled off that year was a "Junior Sneak" held the afternoon of the dame day the Seniors went on their
sneak. Provisions were purchased at noon and the Juniors, half of the Sophomores and a few brave Freshmen girls gathered at Vallecito to spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying hot dogs and marshmallows
while approximately 40 of the 120 in High School remained to grace the halls and classrooms.
In this, our final year, six members of our class contibuted to the team which again reigned as San
Juan Basin "A" league Football Champions. We also have five our our boys on the basketball team that we
hope will reach state for the third time this year.
We are looking forward to the Junior-Senior Prom this year, our free day out of school that we won at
the carnival, and to our final step; GRADUATION.
