My wife Kathy & I vacationed in the Durango area for 25 years prior to moving here in 2005. We always loved the mountains & rivers of Southwest Colorado and always dreamed of moving here after retiring. We fell in love with Bayfield because of its small-town atmosphere. What is your fondest memory of Bayfield since you have been here? My fondest memory was playing music for the Pine River Heritage Days kickoff opening for the Bar-D Wranglers. Also, playing for the Cabin Fever Days event. Do you have a historical memory of something special that has happened in Bayfield? Bob & Kathy Worley Hi! We are The Worleys, Bob & Kathy. We met many, many years ago when we were both working in the same department at the Univ. of Texas at Austin. We were married on March 18, 1978. We both retired in 2004 from different departments there (after working for U.T. 32 and 30 years) and have just celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary. �We chose to have four legged fur babies, miniature dachshunds, as our children. I had Bernard von Baron and Baroness Bridgetta Adelai (father and daughter) when Bob & I met. He “adopted” them as his own when we married. Since then, we’ve had Ginny Sue & Daisy Lou and now have Ellie Mae & Rosie Fae. *I now have Lilly Grace & Holly Faith –BW. Summer 2005, we took a leap of faith and moved here to Bayfield -- an area we had fallen in love with and where we had vacationed in our RV for 25+ years. We had no family or friends here but knew music would bring us the opportunity to make new friends. In Texas, we had a band for over 5 years that only played John Denver music and we hoped to be given that opportunity again. After searching for prospective band members for our new group to no avail, we decided to just start playing music as a duo. That decision has worked out very well for us. From Memorial Day to late September, The Worleys play music at the campgrounds at Vallecito Lake and elsewhere in the area. We began playing there 5 years ago and truly love doing it. We play for senior friends in Farmington, in Durango at Sunshine Gardens, for Cabin Fever Days and for Heritage Days in Bayfield. We’ve played many times at our Senior Center in Bayfield. We’ve had some kind of RV ever since we met, moving up from a tent to a pop-up truck bed camper to a 15’ towable camper to a 26’ towable camper to a 31’ towable camper to finally this new one that is a 38’ fifth wheel. Over the years, we’ve toured many national parks all over the U.S. We recently purchased a new truck and RV and hope to travel every chance we get. We first learned of this wonderful group of seniors after playing music for their Christmas lunch in December 2005. Since then we have become active members of this organization. We were first members of the Site Committee and now are board members. My Parents—I was born in Durango and raised in Bayfield in early 70’s What is your fondest memory of Bayfield since you have been here? The 4th July parades used to go around down town twice. My dad was apart of the fire department & I would get to ride on the top of the fire truck in the parade and set on the top of the fire truck in the bottom of Joe Stephenson Park behind the rodeo arena to watch the fire works being set off. Do you have a historical memory or something special that has happened in Bayfield? In the mid 80’s Pine River Valley Bank was robbed by 3 local high school students and then later the same boys kidnapped the bank president’s son. Back in 1972 the bank was on Mill Street and later it housed the Library, Town Hall and bus station and the Town Clerk (LaVina Mars) had to put together trips for people on the bus. There was stories and articles about the Ku Klux Klan and people killing people over water and if you were anything other than white you were ran out of town, sometimes even burn out and sometimes even their houses were burned down. Remembered the roads were dirt until mid 80’s. Also in the mid 80’s for several years they had the Grande Prix which was a car race against time; they started on Mill Street and went around the down town area. �Brenda Jones - Senior Center Coordinator I was born in Durango and raised in Bayfield as an only child. Graduated Bayfield High School and attended San Juan Vo-Tech in Cortez. My parents still live around the area Tom Bennett here in Bayfield, Laverne Madrid in Oxford. I Married the love of my life in 1992 Tommy Jones from Marvel, Colorado. Together Tommy and I restored antique tractors and took them to the parades and tractor pulls. After dealing with congestive heart failure, and bone marrow cancer Tommy was killed in a car accident, and I became a widow in December 2010. I have a black belt in Shotokan Karate and enjoy the outdoors especially the mountains and waterfalls. �I don’t have any kids except for the four legged variety. I have a Jack Russell Terrier named Rusty and a cat named Lucky. I have worked as an auto parts delivery person, a line supervisor for Fort Lewis College cafeteria and then started working for the Town of Bayfield in April of 1996. I started taking payments for La Plata Electric, Kinder Morgan Gas company and then the utility billing for the town. After 14 years due to health issues with my husband, I changed to cleaning the Town Hall, the Marshals Office and the Senior Center, and served as a currier person taking and delivering things to and from Durango for the Town Administration, Public Works and the Marshals Office. In December of 2010, I became the Senior Center Coordinator, in addition to continuing my cleaning duties with the Town. Born in a house up the hill at eastern end of Mill Street – graduated BHS – drove a school bus fall of 49 – winter of 1950. Attended Arizona State College 1950-51. Fort Lewis (Hesperus) 1951-52. Graduated ASC 53-54 Tempe (became ASU late 50s?). Jim’s room freshman year was under the football stadium. What is your fondest memory of Bayfield since you have been here? From the time the Bayfield boys started playing basketball (the high school was built and 1st class graduated in 1926) they used the Stocks Garage in a room upstairs to practice and play. When they started practicing in 1947 Mr. Stock (Phil Sr.) stopped the coach and told him he would like to end his agreement to use the facility (they had to cut a hole in the ceiling over each basket). Coach Baker called a meeting of fathers and others that night to discuss this; several (including the school board) attended and later convened at the local bar. By the time they left this night a decision had been made to build a new gymnasium. With donations from community groups, individuals and businesses of money and labor to build one – the summer of 1948 construction began. The people with the help of a contractor completed the project by fall of 1949 after necessary fundraising. (Jim remembers the construction was going on through his junior and senior years- 1947-48 when the kids did some of the concrete pouring, etc.) so the date of completion was his senior year 1949. (The dates are apparently off by a year when the initial decision was made. -EF) During that senior year, Bayfield has a good team; a tournament was held in the new gym – Silverton won that tournament. That team beat Farmington, Aztec, Cortez, Durango, and some teams from Utah that season. There was a barn on the WSW corner of this property where the kids riding their horses to school kept them during the day (? don’t know whose barn). My dad’s job building natural gas plants and pipelines in 1955. What is your fondest memory of Bayfield since you have been here? The Fourth of July parades; the huge rodeos in the summer. Do you have a historical memory of something special that has happened in Bayfield? Phyllis Heffington Ludwig Hi, my name is Phyllis I was born March 11, 1942 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Russellville, Arkansas. Moved to Canute, Oklahoma, when I was 10 days old where my dad farmed, then to Burns Flat, Oklahoma. Also to a farm and finally to Elk City, Oklahoma to yet another farm. �When I was 5 years old, we moved to Danville, Arkansas where my dad went to work for his brother at his sawmill. At age 6 I started school in Danville, went there for three months then moved to Belleville, Arkansas where my dad farmed and worked at a service station. Third grade rolled around and that found us moving to the Navajo Reservation in Ramah, New Mexico where my dad went back to work for his brother at a sawmill. My older brother Donald and I enjoyed spending our free time exploring nearby cliff dwellings and looking for fossils… quite an education for us both. Fourth grade found us living in Smith Lake, New Mexico, fifth, sixth & seventh grades were spent living in Thoreau, New Mexico. My dad changed jobs, going into the construction business building gas plants. This job took us to Runge, Texas. I was in the eighth grade and the BIG school had me pretty up tight. The next job brought us to Bayfield, Colorado, where I started the ninth grade….remained here until my sophomore year, then came Grants, New Mexico, Winston New Mexico, Cuchillo, New Mexico and then Dubach, Louisiana. Probably one of my happiest days was when dad came home from work & stated that we were moving back to Bayfield. I graduated from Bayfield High School in 1959. After graduation, I worked for a CPA and a lawyer in Durango before beginning my banking years …seventeen in all. I married Gerald in 1962 (had dated since our junior year in high school) our first son, Ricky, was born in 1964, his sister Tracie joined us in 1967 and our third child Ronnie was born in 1977. While we were raising our family, I also worked for Le Platt LP Gas, Turner Industrial Bank, Burns National Bank, Ignacio State Bank; and on Saturdays, I worked at the Bayfield Post Office. The Post Office finally became my one and only job (other than raising our family). I became Postmaster in 1979 and retired in 2003. Gerald and I now operate the Ludwig Ranch just south of Bayfield; we enjoy our eight grandkids and raise cattle and horses, a wonderful way to “retire.” My other interest have been volunteer work for the Pine River 4-H Club, LaPlata Council on Aging, SPAC, Pine River Senior Center, Upper Pine River Fire Department Auxiliary and the local museum. Tony Schrier I was born in 1944, the last winter of World War II in the Netherlands. We spent that winter hungry since the Germans keep all the food for themselves. In 1950, my Dad was trying to improve his work situation and looked for opportunities elsewhere since work was hard to come by and he had lost his business. He ended up working for the US corps of engineers in Maroc, which at that time was a French colony. �Finally, in 1951, the decision was made for Mom, my brother and I go to Maroc. In 1958, the US military was starting to pull out of Maroc, my parents had to make a decision on where to go. Several friends of theirs over the years had been encouraging them to go the USA. The decision was made to do that and the family applied for visas and moved to the USA in 1959. The destination was Las Vegas, Nevada. I was enrolled in Gorman High School even though I never graduated from grade school. I was quite concerned that I would not cope well with High School, but that proved to be of no concern. When registering for school I was informed that I had to take a foreign language. I responded that English is a foreign language, but that was not an option. At that time, Dutch was my native language and French, Arabic and English were secondary. The decision during my senior year is what next! The idea of becoming an attorney was still strong so I chose a college that also had a law school. Somehow, I decided that I would continue with the Catholic schooling that left me with two schools to consider both Jesuits Universities. The University of San Francisco ended up being my choice. When I left school the US government decided that I should go into the US Army in 1965. During that period I managed to go to Fort Polk, LA, then Fort Bliss, TX, followed by Vietnam and for closing Germany. Upon return to the US in 1970, I started my career in the Banking/Finance where I met Anne, who worked for the company attorney. That relationship ended up in a wedding on November 27th 1971. After 27 years of being a bachelor, I was married to Anne and had an immediate family of four; Anne had 2 children from her prior marriage. That career ended up taking the family to Utah, Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Illinois and Pennsylvania. From there we retired to Bayfield in 1999 and had our retirement home built. But in 2000 I was made an offer to go back to work in Texas which lasted till 2008 when I retired for good. Then I got involved with the Pine River Valley Historical Society and the American Legion post to occupy my time when I am not doing something with my stamp collections.
